Onsite Wastewater Board

In Alabama, the Onsite Wastewater Board AOWB is in charge of examining, licensing, regulating, and establishing qualification levels for individuals in manufacturing, installing, or servicing onsite wastewater systems. Examinations for licensure are administered and processed by the AWOB. The applicants must apply to take the test, which is a written exam with a minimum passing score of 80 percent. The Board currently offers certification for six licenses, which are:

  • Advanced Level I
  • Advanced Level II
  • Basic Installer
  • Manufacturer
  • Portable Toilet
  • Pumper

How to Get an Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board License?

Alabama Basic Installer License

  1. Meet the experience requirements, which is 12 months of work experience in the installation of septic tanks or have worked with a Basic Installer
    • Applicants who currently possess either the Manufacturer, Portable Toilet, or Pumper license and who have had it for at least 12 months will have the work experience requirement waived
  2. Request an Application for Eligibility to Obtain a License from the Executive Director or designee, and once received, fill it out and submit it. Await the Board approval notification via regular mail to continue the application process. Once approved, the candidate must refer to the Board’s website to identify the authorized training providers
  3. Gather the following documentation:
  4. Submit all the verification documents with the required fees by fax at 334-353-0122 or by mail to: Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board P.O. Box 303552
  5. Send a completed Application for Testing and any testing fees required to the Executive Director for approval (applicants have 6 months to take the exam)
  6. Take and pass the written examination offered by the AOWB with a minimum passing score of 80%
  7. Await a response from the Board regarding the examination results. Results are usually provided within 14 days after the test is taken. If approved, information on completing the rest of the licensure process will be provided to the applicant

Manufacturer, Portable Toilet, or Pumper License

  1. Meet the six-month work experience as a Manufacturer, Pumper, or Toilet Operator
      Work experience can be waived for applicants who have held a Basic Installer License with the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board for 6 months
  2. Contact the Executive Director or designee for the license application for eligibility, complete and submit it once received. To continue the application process, wait for the admission notice from the board by regular mail. Once approved, the applicant must search for authorized training providers on the government website
  3. Gather the following documentation:

  5. Fax an Alabama Application for Testing and the applicable fees to the Executive Director for approval
  6. Take the written examination offered by the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board. The Board will determine the level of achievement required for a passing grade
    • Results are usually provided within 14 days after taking the test
  7. Receive the test results and additional information to complete the licensure process if approved

Level I and II Installers License

  1. Fulfill the following qualifications requirements for the license chosen:
    • Advanced Level I:
      • Have held the AOWB Basic Installer License for at least 24 months (Holders of this license for more than 10 continuous active license service years shall contact the Board directly to confirm what are the specific requirements for their licensure process)
      • Worked on a minimum of five conventional sewage systems
      • Satisfy the Board-required education pertaining to the Basic Level Installer License
    • Advanced Level II
      • Have held the AOWB Advanced Level I Installer License for at least 24 months (Holders of this license for more than 10 continuous active license service years shall contact the Board directly to confirm what are the specific requirements for their licensure process)
      • Worked on a minimum of five conventional engineered systems
      • Satisfy the Board-required education pertaining to the Advance Level Installer License
  2. Fill out and sign the package for Eligibility Requirements and complete the documentation for Advanced Level I Installer Application or Advanced Level II Installer Application as required. Wait for the admission notice from the board by regular mail to continue the application process
  3. Gather all the following documents:
  4. Submit the application, the required fees, and the necessary documents through fax at 334-353-0122 or to:

  5. Once the application is processed, expect a letter regarding training and exam eligibility
  6. Complete the Application for Testing for the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board and expect approval
  7. Take the written test. The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board will determine the level of achievement required for a passing grade
  8. Await for the Board’s response regarding the test results and further instructions on completing the licensure process
