Licensing Board for General Contractors

The Licensing Board for General Contractors is one of the several boards that regulate contractor licenses for the State of Alabama. The board currently holds reciprocity for General Contractor licenses with Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Additionally, applicants must be licensed for one year with the same classification being requested in Alabama and must complete the Out of State License Verification Form.

This board’s purpose is processing, reviewing, and approving licenses for prime contractors and subcontractors who wish to be licensed under any of the general contractor classifications listed below:

How to Become a Prime or Subcontractor in Alabama?

  1. Meet the licensure requirements:
    • Have a minimum net worth and working capital of $10,000
    • Have previous commercial/industrial work experience in the desired classification that can be proven by three separate reference forms submitted by any combination of the following:
  2. Fill out and submit a completed Prime Contractor application or Subcontractor application and mail it along with the corresponding fees and required documents to: Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors

  3. Take and pass the required examination once the application is reviewed and approved
    • It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit passing test scores to the Board. Testing for General Contractors is carried out by PSI©
  4. Upon approval, expect a response from the department regarding the license issuance
