Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board

The Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board (PGFB) regulates and certifies Gas Fitters, Plumbers, and Medical Gas Piping Fitters for the State of Alabama. Also, it offers valuable insights into the application process and licensure requirements for applicants. ProV© provides exams. How to Get a Plumber/Gas Fitter License in Alabama?

Apprentices for Gas Fitter/Plumbers

  1. Submit an Apprentice Registration Form or fill the Online Registration for new Apprentice
  2. Provide a copy of your valid photo identification
  3. Enroll a form of payment with a Credit Card Authorization form or E-check

Step by Step to Get Journeyman Gas Fitters and Journeyman Plumbers License

  1. Meet the experience requirements:
    • Have been an Apprentice for at least 2 years or have successfully completed a board-approved apprentice training program along with the two-year time requirement as a registered apprentice
    • Submit documentation as proof of the two years of experience as an apprentice if was gained through other means
    • Provide one or more of the following documents as proof of educational or training program for the (PGFB) to consider the request of acceptance
      • Copy from educational institution describing the coursework
      • Completion of a training program with a detailed explanation of the type of program completed
      • Verifiable documentation that is considered relevant to the training program or educational institution
  2. Complete the Board Request form and submit it with the following documents:
    • Endorsed letters from previous employers that detail the time of experience along with the type of experience received
    • W2s proving employment at a company working in the plumbing and/or gas fitting area
    • Military documentation, if applicable
    • Any other verifiable documentation relevant to proving the required experience
  3. Fill out and sign the Application for Examination, follow the corresponding instructions, and submit the form; once the exam application is processed, expect an answer from the department regarding exam eligibility notification to schedule your exam
  4. Take and pass the examination with ProV©
    • Out of State journeyman applicants must successfully pass the exam with a minimum of 70%, they must also be standing with no unresolved disciplinary issues; the licensing agency of the state must complete the Verification of License or Registration form or provide the same information requested on the verification of license or registration form on standard agency form or letterhead
  5. Fill out and submit the Application for Certificate & Initial Packet Journeyman form upon successfully passing the examination
  6. If approved, pay all the prescribed fees within 90 days of the exam approval date to become licensed

Instructions for Masters for Gas Fitter/Plumbers License

  1. Meet the Master Gas Fitter or Master Plumber exam requirements:
    • Minimum of one year as a Journeyman Plumber to become eligible to take the Master Plumber Exam
    • Fill out and sign the Application for Examination, follow the corresponding instructions, and submit the form; once the exam application is processed, expect an answer from the department regarding exam eligibility notification concerning scheduling your exam
  2. Take and pass the examination with ProV©
    • Out-of-state applicants who currently hold the Master Plumber license in a different state may take the exam in Alabama under the following conditions:
      • Must have approved the out-of-state license exam with a minimum score of 70%
      • The current license must be active and have no disciplinary issues
      • The licensing agency that processed the applicant’s license must complete the bottom half of the Request For Verification of License/Registration form or provide the same information requested on the form on standard agency form or letterhead
  3. Complete the Initial Application for Certificate Master upon passing a Masters exam
  4. After validation, pay all the prescribed fees within 90 days of the exam approval date to become certified

Guideline to Obtain a Medical Gas Piping Fitters License

  1. Have a current annual certification, available for inspection on request
  2. Works under the direct supervision of a certified Master or Journeyman
  3. Hold a valid certification as an ASSE 6010 Installer in addition to one of the following classifications or certifications:
    • Apprentice Gas Fitter
    • Apprentice Plumber
    • Journeyman Gas Fitter
    • Journeyman Plumber
    • Master Gas Fitter
    • Master Plumber

The Medical Gas Piping Fitter license does not require an examination since it is an endorsement certification, but the applicant must wait to the Board’s approval.

Information for Companies Performing Plumbing or Gas Fitting Work

All Alabama companies must register with the PGFB before bidding on or performing work in the state. A Principal Master Designee is required for all companies. All Apprentice and Journeyman level employees that work for a registered company must also be registered or certified with the board. The Principal Master Designee is responsible for installing, maintaining, contracting, superintending, or repairing plumbing or fitting gas systems for any legal entity. The active employee responsible for plumbing or gas fitting systems must be actively connected with the conduct of the business. Also, they shall at least be certified as a master and must have an active annual certificate.
