Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors
The Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors (HACR) certifies and qualifies contractors to install, service, and repair heating or refrigeration systems. The HACR Board is also in charge of regulating current contractors to ensure compliance with Alabama Laws and Codes, as well as processing and licensing applicants who wish to obtain one of the available licenses. The Alabama Apprentice, Certified Heating and Air Conditioning, Certified Refrigeration, Duct Air Tightness Testing are the four licenses offered by the HACR. Alabama currently holds reciprocity with Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Louisiana.
How to Get a Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractor’s License?
- Meet the eligibility requirements for a certification by providing one of the three options that the HACR provides:
- Notarized affidavits by the employer stating that the applicant has worked for at least two years in the Heating and Air Conditioning and/or Commercial Refrigeration industry together with all W-2 forms from the employers
- Proof of completion of at least 3,000 hours of Heating and Air Conditioning coursework
- Proof of attendance and graduation from an approved Heating and Air Conditioning and/or Commercial Refrigeration curriculum
- Acquire certification by examination,aplicant must achieve a score of 70% to pass the HAC or the Refrigeration exam
- Select the desired license status. The board has two HVAC or Refrigeration license status options for the applicant to fulfill the application process
- Active Status: contractors must have a business name and performance bond of $15,000 and must pay an annual fee
- Inactive Status: The inactive status fee is paid annually for a contractor in case the applicant wants to hold a certification without performing any work
- Await for the Board to review and approve the documentation attached to the application, and to issue the license accordingly
