Construction Licenses in Brevard County

Select the Brevard County contractor license you wish to obtain and the information on the scope of work, books, classes, and exams related to it will be displayed on a new page. Please notice that there are two testing companies listed (GITS©, and Prometric©); you are free to choose any testing company approved by Brevard County.

Alarm I

Installation and repair of all types of alarm systems.

Alarm System II

Repair and installation of service alarm systems, but does not cover fire alarms.

Building

Construction of commercial and single-dwelling or multiple dwelling residential buildings which do not exceed three stories in height. Also includes remodeling, repair or improvement of any size building if the services do not affect the structural members of the building.

Drywall

Installation of drywall and all necessary and incidental metal accessories, including nonload bearing studs, runners, hangers, channels, drywall metal suspension accessories and prefabricated ceiling materials; and the preparation of the surface over which drywall product is to be applied.

Electrical

Establishment of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit or any part thereof, which generates, transmits, transforms or utilizes electrical energy in any form, including the electrical installations and systems within plants and substations.

Electrical Sign

Fabrication of wiring of electrical signs and outline lighting. Shall not include the provision of, or any electrical work beyond the last disconnect mean or terminal points. May provide the electrical entrance requirements for metering and main disconnect of remote billboards or signs which are independent of any structure or building and which require no more than 25 kilowatts at 250 volts maximum.

Excavation

Excavation or removal of materials such as rock, gravel, and sand to construct or excavate canals, lakes, levees, including the clearing of land of surface debris and vegetation, the grubbing of roots, the removal of debris, and leveling of the surface lands incidental thereto.

Fence

Installation and repair of metal, wood, pvc, and plastic fences.

Flooring

Installation and repair of sub-flooring and finish floor coverings, including wood, parquet, resilient tile, sheet vinyl and floor trim.

Framing/Carpentry

Installation of any wood products in a building including, but not limited to, rough framing, structural and nonstructural trusses, sheathing and metal framing, and finish carpentry.

Garage Door

Installation and repair of garage doors.

General Unlimited

Execution of any construction contract.

HARV Limited Class “B”

Limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTUs of heating in any one system. It includes the installation of central air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system, piping and insulation of pipes, vessels, and ducts. Connection of power wiring on the load side of the dedicated existing electrical disconnect switch, low voltage heating, ventilating, and air conditioning control wiring. Also includes the installation of a condensate drain from an air conditioning unit to an existing safe waste or other approved disposal other than a direct connection to a sanitary system.

HARV Unlimited Class “A”

Installation of central air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system, boiler and unfired pressure vessel systems, and all appurtenances, apparatus or equipment use in connection therewith, piping, insulation of pipes, vessels and ducts, pressure and process piping and pneumatic control piping. Connectionof power wiring on the load side of the dedicated existing electrical disconnect switch; low voltage heating, ventilating and air conditioning control wiring. Also includes the installation of a condensate drain from an air conditioning unit to an existing safe waste or other approved disposal other than a direct connection to a sanitary system. Shall not include any work such as liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections thereto, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters or electrical power wiring.

Irrigation

Piping and sprinkler heads for the irrigation of lawns, including the connection to a water pump. May install a water pump and all required wiring in conjunction, but may not connect/extend any electrical service beyond a disconnect.

Journeyman Electrician

Installation of electrical fixtures of systems or any part thereof. May only work under a contractor.

Journeyman H.A.R.V Mechanic

Installation of HARV fixtures or systems or any part thereof. Must work under a contractor.

Journeyman Plumber

Installation of plumbing fixtures or systems or any part thereof. May only work under a contractor.

Limited Energy Systems

Erection of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, thermostats, apparatus, raceways, conduit, and fiber optics (transmission of light over stranded glass) or any part thereof not to exceed 98 volts, when those items are for the purpose of transmitting data, proprietary video (satellite systems which are not part of a community antenna television or radio distribution system), central vacuum, or electric locks.

Marine I

Construction of docks, seawalls, bulkheads, piers, wharfs, boatlifts and other marine structures, including pile driving, wood framing, and roofing in conjunction with the erection of wood structures being constructed consistent with the marine work that is being done. This wood structure is not to be used for habitation or office space.

Marine II

Erection of docks, seawalls, bulkheads, piers, wharfs, boat lifts and other marine structures, including pile driving. Can do such concrete work as may be necessary.

Masonry

Installation of brick and concrete block or any other unit masonry products and other baked clay products, rough cut and dress stone, artificial stone and pre-cast block, structural glass brick or block and insulated concrete wall units. Also includes placement of reinforcing steel and concrete forming.

Mechanical

Installation of central air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system and air-distribution system, boiler and unfired pressure vessel systems, lift station equipment and piping, and all appurtenances, apparatus or equipment used in connection. Shall not include any work such as liquefied petroleum gas fuel lines within buildings, potable water lines or connections thereto, sanitary sewer lines, swimming pool piping and filters, or electrical power wiring.

Painting

Cleaning, caulking and priming of surfaces in preparation for the application of paint, waterproofing or viscous products by brush, roller or spray methods in such a manner that, under an agreed specification, satisfactory painting can be accomplished. May include pressure spraying to clean surfaces of homes or buildings.

Plumbing

Installation of sanitary drainage or storm drainage facilities; venting systems; public or private water supply systems; septic tanks; drainage and supply wells; swimming pool piping; irrigation systems, or solar heating water systems and all appurtenances, apparatus or equipment used in connection therewith; including boilers and pressure process piping, water, natural gas (excluding liquid petroleum gases) and storm and sanitary sewer lines; water and sewer plants and substations. Also includes air-piping, vacuum line piping, oxygen line piping, nitrous oxide piping, and all related medical gas systems; fire line standpipes and fire sprinklers to the extent authorized by law; ink and chemical lines; fuel oil and gasoline piping and tank and pump installation; except bulk storage plants; and pneumatic control piping systems.

Residential

Constrution and remodeling one-family, two-family or three-family residences not exceeding two habitable stories above no more than one uninhabitable story.

Roofing

Installation and repair of all kinds of roofing, waterproofing and coating, except when coating is not represented to protect, repair, waterproof, stop leaks or extend the life of the roof.

Sheet Metal

Installation of sheet metal and ferrous and nonferrous materials of U.S. No. 10 gauge or its equivalent or lighter gauge, and other similar materials including fiberglass, used in lieu thereof, including air distribution, turning vanes, splitter or volume dampers, fire dampers, internal and exterior insulation, access doors, for the purpose of moving, directing and controlling air in the operation of heating, air conditioning and ventilation equipment, and all designed architectural sheet metal, excluding, however, the setting of equipment or installation of any air handling equipment or electrical resistance heaters.

Sheet Metal Journeyman

Must work under a contractor. Installation of sheet metal fixtures or systems or any part thereof.

Solar Water Heating

Installation and replacement of solar panels for potable solar water heating systems, swimming pool solar heating systems, and photovoltaic systems and all appurtenances, apparatus or equipment to be used in connection therewith whether public, private or otherwise, regardless of use.

Specialty Structure

Installation of aluminum railings, awnings, screen enclosures, prefabricated cabanas, carports, pool enclosures, preformed panel-post and beam roofs, mobile home panel roof-overs, residential glass window and door enclosures, vinyl panel window enclosures, single story self-contained aluminum utility storage structures (not to exceed 720 square feet). Includes masonry concrete work and be limited to foundations, slabs and block kneewalls incidental to the aluminum and allied materials associated with the construction trade.

Storm Shutter

Erection of county-approved storm shutters in both residential and commercial facilities, including both manually and mechanically operated shutters. No electrical work may be performed under this scope. Only nonstructural adjustments to existing openings may be performed as a part of the work.

Stucco

Installation of coating surfaces with a mixture of sand or other aggregate gypsum plaster, portland cement or quicklime and water, or any combination of such material as to create a permanent surface coating.

Swimming Pool Finishing

Coating or finishing of the interior surfaces of a commercial or residential swimming pool, spa or hot tub with materials such as marcite, water type plaster, fiberglass or use products designed to create a permanent surface coating and which is usually applied with a plasterer's trowel or by pneumatic pressure to a surface which offers an existing mechanical key for the support of such coatings or to which such coating will adhere by suction.

Swimming Pool/Spa

Repair of equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling, excluding filter changes, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior finishes, the installation of package pool heaters, the installation of all perimeter piping and filter piping, and the construction of equipment rooms or housing for pool/spa equipment, and also includes the scope of work of a swimming pool/spa servicing contractor. Does not include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or to a potable water lines.

Swimming Pool/Spa Servicing

Repair of equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing, excluding filter changes, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior refinishing, the reinstallation or addition of pool heaters, the repair or replacement of all perimeter piping and filter piping, the repair of equipment rooms or housing for pool/spa equipment, and the substantial or complete draining of a swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, for the purpose of any repair or renovation. Does not include direct connections to a sanitary sewer system or to potable water lines.

Tile, Marble, and Terrazzo

Installation and repair of sub-flooring and finish floor coverings, including tile, marble and terrazzo.

Underground Utilities

Installation of utility lines. Shall not include installation of piping that constitutes the exclusive part of any fire protection/suppression system from the detector check valve, detector service valve, or engineer's designated point of connection.

Window and Door

Erection of wood or metal windows and doors. This work includes the work necessary to repair the substrate to accomplish proper installation including removal and repair of individual structural components but does not include removal of structural assemblies.

Documentation Needed for Your Application

  • A completed application and appropriate fee for your trade.
  • Experience affidavits from employers (unless self-employed) showing the required years of experience. This varies per trade.
  • A recent photo attached to your application.
  • Three (3) letters of personal reference. These will be in relation to your Honesty, Integrity, Good Moral Character. ALL of these letters need to have notarized signatures.
  • A copy of your driver’s license or state identification card.
  • Meet CLB rule 61G4-15.005 which establishes minimum net worth.
  • Notarized signature of applicant on signature pages.

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation from contractors whom applicants have worked either for or with, or reputable business or professional people, not related by blood or marriage to the applicant, vouching for the applicant’s reputation as to honesty, integrity and good moral character. Letters must be on business letterhead or notarized. LETTERS MUST BE ORIGINALS. FAXES OR COPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Experience Requirements

Ways for Contractors to Satisfy their Experience Requirements

  • Has received a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four (4) year college in the appropriate field of engineering, architecture, or building construction and has two (2) years of proven experience in the trade category. A minimum of 2,000 hours shall be used in determining full-time equivalence.
  • OR
    Has a total of at least four (4) years of active experience as a skilled workman who is able to command the pay rate of a mechanic in his particular trade or as a foreman who is in charge of a group of workmen and usually responsible to a superintendent or a contractor or his equivalent, provided, however, that at least one (1) year of active experience shall be as a foreman.
  • OR
    A combination of not less than one (1) year of experience as a foreman and not less than three (3) years of credits for any accredited college-level courses in the appropriate trade.
  • OR
    Has a combination of not less than one (1) year of experience as a skilled workman, one (1) year of experience as a foreman and not less than two (2) years of credits for any college level courses in the appropriate trade.
  • OR
    Has a combination of not less than two (2) years of experience as a skilled workman, one (1) year of experience as a foreman and not less than one (1) year of credits for any college level courses in the appropriate trade.
  • OR
    Provide evidence of a minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in the trade or have an active journeyman license for three (3) years. For the number of years of credits for any college level courses, the applicant shall show completion of an equal number of courses in the appropriate field of engineering, architecture, or building construction. All junior college or community college level courses shall be considered accredited college level courses. Proof of schools, apprenticeship programs, including dates, diplomas, letters and other pertinent information and recommendations must be provided. The Contractors' Licensing Board may, in its sole discretion, consider a person's formal or vocational education as practical experience in the trade if the education is in the trade for which the person is applying.

EXPERIENCE MUST BE DOCUMENTED IN WRITING BY YOUR EMPLOYER(S) (PAST OR PRESENT) FOR PROOF OF EXPERIENCE. More than one experience form may be used. All documents must be originals.

Years of Experience by Trade

Ways for Journeyman and Masters to Satisfy their Experience Requirements

ALL JOURNEYMAN APPLICANTS shall provide evidence of four (4) years experience in the trade; however, the Contractors’ Licensing Board may reduce said requirement to two (2) years for individuals who show proof of formal education in the applicable trade.

An individual who has completed four (4) years (2000 hours OJT per year) of apprenticeship training in the trade and furnishes a certificate as proof of training are considered to have the required experience. ALL MASTER APPLICANTS shall provide evidence of five (5) years of practical experience in the trade, of which a minimum of three (3) years can be as a journeyman. The Contractors’ Licensing Board may consider a person’s formal vocational education as practical experience in the trade.

MASTERS ARE NOT CONTRACTORS, CANNOT PULL PERMITS OR OPERATE A BUSINESS EXPERIENCE MUST BE DOCUMENTED IN WRITING BY YOUR EMPLOYER(S) (PAST OR PRESENT) FOR PROOF OF EXPERIENCE, see attached. More than one experience form may be used or original letters on business letterhead or original notarized letters.

The letters must be specific to the type of work that was done and must document the dates of employment. All documents must be originals. If Experience Documentation is not completed by a certified contractor, the documentation may be completed by authorized personnel who has or had job related direct contact with applicant, i.e., job superintendent or supervisor.
