Utah Electrical Licenses
The licenses for electricians are issued by the Utah Department of Commerce Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing and the Electricians Licensing Board. The Department offers the following licenses:
Utah’s Electrical Licenses
- Apprentice Electrician
- General Electrical Contractor (E200)
- Journeyman Electrician (JE)
- Master Electrician (ME)
- Residential Electrical Contractor (E201)
- Residential Journeyman Electrician (RJE)
- Residential Master Electrician (RME)
The license application process is divided into contractors, journeymen, masters, residentials, and apprentices. Find out all the needed information and step-by-step instruction on how to become a licensed electrician in the State of Utah down below:
How to get an Electrical Contractor License in Utah?
- Meet the requirements for General and Specialty classifications. Candidates must have a Master's license for this trade to apply for this license
- Register for the Utah Contractor Business and Law Exam:
- Apply online in ProV©
- Fill out the required information
- Schedule and pay for the examination
- If scheduling by phone, call 877-228-3926
- Take and pass the examination
- Once completed send the application form to:

How to get an Electrical Journeyman, Master, or Residential License in Utah?
- Check the requirements for Utah applicants to obtain a license in one of these trades.
- Journeyman Electrician (JE) qualifications:
Option 1:
- Have a four years electrical apprenticeship education program.
- Have 8000 hours of licensed electrical experience working under the supervision of a Master Electrician or a licensed Journeyman.
- Pass the Journeyman Electrician Code, Practical, and Theory exams.
Option 2:
- Have 16,000 hours of licensed electrical experience working under the supervision of a Master Electrician or a licensed Journeyman.
- Pass the Journeyman Electrician Code, Practical, and Theory exams.
- Master Electrician (ME) qualifications:
Option 1:
- Have 8000 hours of experience as a Journeyman (must be licensed).
- Pass the Master Electrician Code, Practical, and Theory exams. (If previously passed as a Journeyman, the Practical Exam is not required).
Option 2:
- Have a bachelor's or master's degree in an electrical engineering program accredited by EAC/ABET.
- Have 2000 hours of work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.
- Pass the Master Electrician Code, Theory, and Practical exams. (The Practical Exam is not required If previously passed as a Journeyman).
Option 3:
- Have 4000 hours of work experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician.
- Have an associate's degree in applied science from an electrical trade school.
- Pass the Master Electrician Code, Theory, and Practical exams. (The Practical exam is not required If previously passed as a journeyman).
- Residential Journeyman Electrician (RJE) qualifications:
Option 1:
- Have completed a two-year electrical apprenticeship education program.
- Have 4000 hours as a licensed Apprentice Electrician working under the supervision of a licensed Master or a Journeyman electrician.
- Pass the Residential Journeyman Electrician Code, Practical, and Theory exams.
Option 2:
- Have 8000 hours of licensed electrical experience working under the supervision of a licensed Master or a Journeyman Electrician.
- Pass the Residential Journeyman Electrician Code, Practical, and Theory exams.
- Residential Master Electrician (RME) qualifications:
Option 1:
- Have 4000 hours of work experience as a licensed Residential Journeyman Electrician.
- Pass the Residential Master Electrician Code, Practical and Theory exams.
- If the candidate has approved the Practical Exam as a Residential Journeyman, there is no need to take this exam again.
Option 2:
- Have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in an Electrical Engineering program accredited by EAC/ABET.
- Have accomplished 2000 hours of work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.
- Have passed the Utah Residential Master Electrician Code, Theory, and Practical exams.
- If the candidate has approved the Practical Exam as a Residential Journeyman, it is unnecessary to repeat the examination.
- Journeyman Electrician (JE) qualifications:
- Take the Code, Theory, and Practical exams for the corresponding trade:
- Apply online in ProV©.
- Choose self-registration.
- In certifying body, select UT- Electrical.
- Then choose the trade and complete the information.
- Schedule and pay the examination.
- If scheduling by phone, 877-228-3926.
- Once successfully passed, submit the license application form and send it to:

- After being approved, expect a confirmation from the Department in four to six weeks
How to get an Electrical Apprentice License in Utah?
- Complete the Verification of Supervision form (must be signed by the employer).
- Apply by filling out the trade Application Form or registering in DOPL My License E-Government.
- Expect the Department's approval to receive your license.
