Martin County Contractor Licenses
Select a license to view its requirements, definition, exams, books, and classes. If your license is not listed as MartinCounty License, please select a Florida License. Martin County requires all applicants to take the Business & Law examination. Except for the following two licenses: Journeyman Electrical, and Journeyman Plumbing.
Martin County will continue to regulate all licenses until July 1st, 2023. Applicants who want to pull permits must be a licensed contractor or the eligible homeowner. Construction Licenses in Martin County
Acoustical/Suspended Ceiling
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair, alter or extend any acoustical/suspended acoustical ceiling systems.
Aluminum with Concrete (Specialty Structure)
A contractor whose services are limited to the execution of contracts requiring experience, knowledge and skill necessary for the fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, dismantling, adjustment, alteration, repair, servicing and design work when not prohibited by law, in accordance with accepted engineering data and/or according to manufacturers specifications in the aluminum, metal, canvas, vinyl and fiberglass screening, and allied construction materials. The scope of work shall include and be limited to fabric coverings on metal substructures, screened porches, screened enclosures, pool enclosures, preformed panel-post and beam roofs, enclosures, vinyl panel window enclosures, single story self-contained aluminum utility storage structures (not to exceed 500 square feet) siding, soffit, fascia and gutters.
Asphalt/Concrete Sealing and Coating
A contractor qualified to coat an existing concrete or asphalt surface by squeegee, broom or mechanical applicator.
Burglar Alarm
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair, alter or extend burglar alarm systems in single-family homes, duplexes, mobile homes. Any electrical installation above 77 volts may be included in the contract for work, but shall be subcontracted to a certified electrical contractor. A burglar alarm contractor may also perform the scope of the communication and sound system contractor.
Carpentry
A contractor qualified to install any wood products in a building including, but not limited to, rough framing, structural and nonstructural trusses, conventional rafters, metal framing and work of the carpentry-finish contractor and wood decks and fences.
Communication and Sound Systems Contractor
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair, alter or extend wiring, apparatus, circuits and equipment operating at less than 50 volts, raceways, computer wiring, conduit for private telephone, cable television systems, intercom and public address systems. This contractor may connect to an existing power circuit beyond the last over current device, but shall not install burglar and fire alarm systems.
Concrete Forming and Finishing
A contractor qualified to batch and mix aggregates, cement and water to agreed specifications, to construct forms and framework for the casting and shaping of concrete and pressure injected footings; to place and erect reinforcing steel and miscellaneous embedded steel; and to place, finish and coat concrete.
Decorative Metal
A contractor qualified to fabricate and install metal railings, columns, handrails and ornamental metals.
Demolition
A contractor qualified to demolish and remove structures, such as dwellings, commercial buildings and foundations not to exceed 50 feet in height.
Drywall (Gypsum)
A contractor is qualified, and whose scope shall be limited to, the installation of all necessary and incidental metal accessories, including nonloadbearing metal studs, runners, hangers, channels, drywall metal suspension accessories and prefabricated ceiling materials; and the preparation of the surface over which drywall product is to be applied. This shall include the application of base and finish coats specifically designed for the gypsum drywall products of their own erection.
Fabric Awning
A contractor qualified to manufacture and install detachable cloth/synthetic cover material over a rigid metal frame designed to be used as a protection against sun and weather. Electrical wiring required for the purpose of lighting the awning may be included in the contract for work, but must be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Fence
A contractor qualified to construct, install, maintain or repair fencing, including wood, precast concrete and prefabricated fences and automatic gates, to safety, zoning and building codes. Electrical installation may be included in the contract for work, but must be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Garage Door
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair, alter or extend residential or commercial type garage doors, including all hardware and operating devices. Door operating devices requiring 120 volt electrical installation may be included in the contract for work, but must be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Glass and Glazing
A contractor qualified to select, cut, assemble and install all makes and kinds of glass and glass work, aluminum and glass curtain walls, window walls and execute the glazing frames, panels, sash and door and holding metal frames.
Gunite
A contractor qualified to mix materials and apply gunite or shotcrete.
Hurricane Shutter/Awning
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair or replace shutters and awnings that are designed to protect residential and commercial dwellings from hurricane and storm force winds and wind-borne debris. This contractor may brace existing garage doors to comply with code, but shall not install new garage doors. Any electrical work connected with the installation of the shutters or awnings may be included in the contract, but shall be subcontracted to licensed electrical contractor.
Insulation
A contractor qualified to install, maintain, repair, alter or extend any insulation primarily installed to prevent loss or gain of heat from internal or external sources in pipes, vessels, ducts or built-up refrigerated boxes or rooms, and radiant barriers.
Irrigation Sprinkler
A contractor qualified to design, install, maintain, repair, alter or extend, within professional and governmental regulations, all piping sprinkler heads, control system components, pump, and chemical injectors for irrigation of lawns and plant materials. Electrical work is limited to 50 volts except for connection of pigtailed equipment or replacement of identical controls and motors. Any equipment requiring electrical work over 50 volts may be included in the contract, but such work shall be performed by a licensed electrical contractor.
For water source, the contractor may connect to the discharge side of a code-approved backflow preventor provided by a licensed plumbing contractor, draw from a legal surface water source or connect to a water well head drilled by a licensed water well driller. Such contractors shall subcontract to a electrical contractor, plumbing contractor, paving contractor, water well driller, horizontal driller, masonry contractor, or landscape contractor as needed to complete the irrigation system.
Journeyman Electrical
Are those who can qualify with a minimum of four years' experience under the employment of an electrical contractor, and who only perform work in the electrical trade while employed by and under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor.
Journeyman Plumbing
Are those who can qualify with a minimum of four years' experience under the employ ment of a plumbing contractor, and who only perform work in the plumbing trade while employed by and under the supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor.
Marine
A contractor qualified with the experience and skill to construct, maintain, alter, install or repair seawalls, bulkheads, revetments, docks, piers, wharfs, groins, boat lifts, davits and other marine structures, including pile driving. Electrical work required to make the equipment operational may be included in the contract, but shall be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Masonry
A contractor qualified to select, cut and lay brick and concrete block, horizontal reinforcement incidental to the placement of the units or any other unit masonry products, lay brick and other baked clay products, rough cut and dress stone, artificial stone and precast blocks, structural glass brick or block, but shall not place or finish concrete.
Painting
A contractor qualified to prepare surfaces, apply paints by any method, brush, roller or sprayer; coatings and other finishes; all types of faux finish applications, excluding waterproofing of roofs.
Paving Brick/Paver Brick System
A contractor qualified with the knowledge, skill and experience to prepare the base, provide for proper drainage, to select, cut and lay paver brick/paver brick systems. The contractor shall not place or finish concrete, except that which is required for the placing of the paver brick/paver brick systems. The contractor shall sub-contract any additional concrete work over and above that which is required by the manufacturers' specifications for paver brick/paver brick systems to a qualified contractor.
Paving (Commercial)
A contractor qualified with the experience and skill to construct roads, airport runways and aprons, parking lots, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, property line walls, storm drainage facilities, paver brick/paver brick systems and to perform the excavating, clearing and grading incidental thereto. Electrical work for lighting that area may be included in the contract, but shall be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Pile Driving
A contractor qualified to drive piling, including sheet piling and construction foundations, including the excavating, forming and placing of reinforcing steel and concrete and performing other work incidental thereto.
Plastering
A contractor qualified to coat surfaces with a mixture of sand or other aggregate gypsum plaster, Portland cement plaster or quick-lime plaster and water, or any natural or synthetic materials as to create a permanent surface coating. This contractor may perform the lathing work.
Prestressed, Precast Concrete Erection
A contractor qualified to erect structural precast concrete units such as deck, beams, girders, walls columns and stairs that are or may be used as structural members for buildings and structures, including welding and rigging in connection therewith and to erect precast concrete systems for guard rails and decorative panels above the ground floor, including such minor field fabrication as may be necessary.
Reinforcing Steel
A contractor qualified to fabricate, place and tie steel reinforcing bars (rods) of any profile, perimeter, or cross-section, that are or may be used to reinforce concrete buildings and structures in such a manner that under all agreed specifications, steel reinforcing bars (rods) for concrete building and structure can be fabricated, placed and tied.
Residential Window, Door and Siding
A contractor qualified to: 1) install, repair, replace or alter windows, doors and hardware in connection therewith and 2) to repair or replace all types of siding, soffit, and fascia.
Roof Deck
A contractor qualified to erect, construct, fabricate and install roof decks, Portland cement or gypsum concrete, using lightweight aggregate, on joists or other supporting members erected by other, and shall include the placing of forms and welding of supporting members for forms and miscellaneous reinforcing of the deck and the proportioning, mixing and placing of cement, aggregate and water, provided, however, that roof decks of wood, metal heavy aggregate concrete, glass or plastic and the application of roofing felts or other water resistant membranes shall not be a part of the scope of such work.
Roofing
A contractor whose services are unlimited in the roofing trade and have the experience, knowledge and skill to install, maintain, repair, alter, extend or design, when not prohibited by law , and use materials and items used in the installation, maintenance, extension and alteration of all kinds of roofing, waterproofing, and coating, except when coating is not represented to protect, repair, waterproof, stop leaks, or extend the life of the roof.
Sign (Electrical)
A contractor qualified to install, repair, alter, add to, or change any electrical wires, apparatus, raceways, conduit or any part thereof on interior or exterior electrical signs and is qualified to erect signs. Such contractor may connect to an existing sign circuit and may contract for and take out building permits for the erection of signs. The scope of certification shall not include the provision of any electrical work beyond the last disconnect mean or terminal points.
Sign (Non-electrical)
A contractor qualified to install, repair, add to or change interior or exterior nonelectrical signs according to the building code.
Structural Steel Erection
A contractor qualified to erect structural steel shapes and plates, including such minor field fabrication as may be necessary of any profile, perimeter or cross-section, that are or may be used as structural members for buildings and structures, including riveting, welding and rigging, only in connection therewith.
Swimming Pool Maintenance
Includes the service, maintenance, and treatment of water in all swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs.
Tennis Court
A contractor qualified to construct, maintain, or repair tennis courts, including the preparation of the surface, drainage, paving, surface topping, concrete, posts, and fencing. Lighting installation may be included in the contract for work, but shall be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Tile, Terrazzo and Marble
A contractor qualified to prepare the base, set, repair and refinish, tile, terrazzo and marble.
Tile and Marble
A contractor qualified to prepare the base and set tile and marble.
TV Antenna and Satellite Dish Contractor
A contractor qualified to fabricate and erect, guy and anchor, satellite dishes and antennas. Electrical work over 50 volts may be included in the contract, but shall be subcontracted to a licensed electrical contractor.
Limited licenses
These are licenses issued by Martin County for activity that does not require a certificate of competency or registration pursuant to Chapter 489, Florida Statutes, or a contractor's license pursuant to this chapter. Such activities include, and are limited to:
- Cabinet Installation
- Carpeting
- Counter Tops
- Decorative Interior Shutters
- Gutters and Downspout
- Interior Trim Carpentry
- Low Voltage Lighting (12 and 24 volt, Plug-in Only)
- Paneling, Paperhanging (Not Painting)
- Rescreening
- Removable pool barrier
- Resilient Flooring (Asphalt Title, Sheet Goods, Wood Floorings)
- Shelving
Martin County Contractor License Application
The application needs to be submitted for the Construction Industry Licensing Board’s (CILB) approval. Upon approval, you will receive registration forms for the exams. You will be required to successfully pass both the trade exam, and the business and law exam with a minimum score of 75%. Please note that everything must be returned by the 10th of month in which you want to be added to CILB agenda.

- Journeyman Plumber | 4 Years
- Graduation from a registered four-year apprenticeship program, which includes four years' work experience; or
- Completion of two years' attendance in a registered apprenticeship program which includes two years' work experience and an additional two years' practical work experience under the direct supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor; or
- Four years' practical work experience under the direct supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor
Verification forms (found within the application form) must be furnished to substantiate the minimum experience required in the category for which application is made. If self employed, verification of required experience may be supplied by any of the following; notarized letters from licensed contractors, building officials, licensing agencies, IRS return forms.
