Plumbing Board of Louisiana (SPBL)
The Plumbing Board of Louisiana (SPBL) is in charge of protecting and regulating the working practices of the plumbing and gas industry in the state. Plumbing and Natural Gas Fitter applicants must pass an examination issued by the National Inspection Testing Certification (NITC©). To obtain the license in the Master and Journeyman category. The SPBL has a reciprocal agreement for the Journeyman Plumber and Journeyman Natural Gas licenses with the state of Texas.
The SPBL also issues the Water Supply Protection Specialist (WSPS) endorsements requiring an authorized provider's certification program. Apprentice Plumber candidates must pass the Apprenticeship Program (candidates can also take a Pre-Apprenticeship course to prepare for the main one).

How to Get a Plumber License?
- Select the desired trade and fill out the application form (all of them must be notarized)
- Fulfill the requirements for the chosen license examination
Master Plumber
- Hold a current Journeyman Plumber license
- Have a current engineer license provided by the Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board (PELSB)
Journeyman Plumber
- Be a current registered Apprentice Plumber
- Have completed or be in the last year of the Apprenticeship Program
- Have 8000 hours or five years of work under the direct supervision of a licensed Journeyman or Master Plumber (be able to show proof)
- Or 8000 hours of payroll documentation provided by a licensed plumbing company in Louisiana
Tradesman Plumber
- Be a current registered Apprentice Plumber
- Have performed manual work or 4000 hours of manual labor or plumbing work under the direct supervision of a licensed Master or Journeyman Plumber
- Send the application, documents, and fees (no less than 30 days before the exam) to:

- Receive the admission letter examination information via mail (approximately two weeks wait time)
- Schedule and pass the trade examination according to the availability on the calendar
- Expect the initial application form from the board. Once the applicant receives it they must fill it and send it with the corresponding fee to the SPBL
- Await the license by mail at the registered address
How to get a Gas License?
- Choose the desired trade and complete the application form
- Meet the requirements for the corresponding trade and make sure to notarize the portion of the application form
Journeyman Natural Gas Fitter
- Have a current Louisiana Plumber license with at least two years of the training period
- Proof of the training period
- Be registered as an Apprentice Plumber with at least 2 years of training
- Pass the trade examination (after applying and being approved)
- Have a current Louisiana Plumber license with at least two years of the training period
Master Natural Gas Fitter
- A current Journeyman Natural Gas Fitter license
- A Mechanical Work License issued by the State Licensing Board for Contractors
- Provide the license certificate
- Applicants can also apply with the professional Engineering license issued by the Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board
- Aspirants must submit license certification
- Pass the trade test (after being approved by the board)
Medical Gas Piping Installer
- Medical Gas training certification by one of the training-approved providers
- 2x2 full-face photo
Medical Gas and Vacuum Systems Verifier
- Front face photograph 2x2
- Hold a Medical Gas-approved training certification
- Send the application form with the payment fee and the documentation to:

- If applying for any Natural Gas Fitter, pass the corresponding examination
- Fill out the initial license application issued by the board and send it with the corresponding fee to the SPBL
- Expect the license at the registered address via mail from the SPBL
How to get a Water Supply Protection Specialist Endorsement?
- Complete the Water Supply Protection Specialist Endorsement (WSPS) program certification by one of the training-approved providers
- Hold one of the following licenses before applying
- Journeyman Plumber
- Master Plumber
- Landscape Irrigation license from the Department of Agricultural and Forestry (LDAF)
- Fill out the WSPS endorsement application form with the corresponding information
- Attach all the documents requested in the application
- WSPS training certificate approved by the SPBL
- 2x2 face photograph
- Attach all the documents requested in the application
- Once completed and signed, the application must be witnessed by a notary public
