Washington Master Limited Energy System (EL06) License

The Master Limited Energy System (EL06) License allows you to do the following work:

  • Supervise electrical work and electricians on the following:
    • Installation of:
      • Signaling and power limited circuits and related equipment
      • Telecommunications
      • HVAC/refrigeration low-voltage wiring
      • Fire protection signaling systems
      • Intrusion alarms
      • Energy management and control systems
      • Industrial and automation control systems
      • Lighting control systems
      • Commercial and residential amplified sound
      • Public address systems
      • Similar low-energy circuits and equipment in all occupancies and locations
  • Repair or replacement of:
    • Line voltage connections (limited to 120 volts 20 amps maximum and must have a means of disconnect) terminated inside the cabinet to power supplies internal to the low voltage equipment, provided there are no modifications to the characteristics of the branch circuit/feeder load being supplied by the circuit
  • Excluded from:
    • Replacing or modifying the line voltage circuit
    • Cabling or altering the means of connection of the line voltage circuit to the power supply or to the control cabinet

When a line voltage connection is removed and reconnected to a replacement component located inside the control cabinet, the replacement must be like-in-kind or replaced using the equipment manufacturer's authorized replacement component. Limited energy electrical contractors may perform all telecommunications work under their specialty (06) electrical license and administrator's certificate.

How to Get the Master Limited Energy System (EL06) License in Washington?

  1. Meet the requirements necessary for the certification level:
    • Have an electrician certificate issued by the department for at least two years
  2. Obtain the following information before doing the application process with PSI©:
    • Social Security Number
    • Mailing address
    • Email address
    • Corresponding fees
  3. Fill out and submit the Application for the Master Limited Energy System (EL06) Examination along with all the previous documents, to:

    The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries allows candidates to apply in person. Please refer to the list of local offices before visiting
  4. Expect a notice by mail from the Labor & Industries department and instructions on exam scheduling once the application is reviewed
  5. Take and pass the examination. For more information on the subjects and study material needed to prepare for the exam, refer to the Candidate Information Bulletin
  6. Complete a Change Assignment of Master Certificate form to be assigned to an electrical contractor and submit it with the corresponding fee
