Washington Master Appliance Repair (7D) License

The Master Appliance Repair (7D) License allows you to do the following work:

  • Supervise electrical work and electricians on the following:
    • Servicing, maintaining, repairing, or replacing:
      • Household appliances
      • Small commercial/industrial appliances
      • Other small electrical utilization equipment that include:
        • Ovens
        • Office equipment
        • Vehicle repair equipment
        • Commercial kitchen equipment
        • Self-contained hot tubs and spas
        • Grinders
        • Scales
      • Appliances and utilization equipment do not include systems and equipment such as:
        • Alarm/energy management/similar systems
        • Luminaires
        • Furnaces/heaters/air conditioners/heat pumps
        • Sewage disposal equipment
        • Door/gate/similar equipment
        • Individual components installed so as to create a system (e.g., pumps, switches, controllers, etc.)
    • Performing the following work:
      • Replacing in-place like-in-kind appliances or equipment if the same unmodified electrical circuit is used to supply the equipment being replaced
      • Replacing like-in-kind electrical components within the appliance or equipment
      • Disconnecting and reconnect low-voltage control and line voltage supply whips not over six feet in length provided there are no modifications to the characteristics of the branch circuit
      • Installing an outlet box and outlet at an existing appliance or equipment location when converting the appliance from a permanent electrical connection to a plug and cord connection. there can be no other modification to the existing branch circuit supplying the appliance or equipment

Work supervised by Master Appliance Repair (7D) licensees DOES NOT include the installation, repair, or modification of:

  • Branch circuits conductors
  • Services
  • Feeders
  • Panelboards
  • Disconnect switches
  • Raceway/conductor systems interconnecting multiple appliances
  • Equipment
  • Other electrical components

How to Get the Master Appliance Repair (7D) License in Washington?

  1. Meet the requirements necessary for the certification level:
    • Have an electrician certificate issued by the department for at least two years
  2. Obtain the following information before doing the application process with PSI©:
    • Social Security Number
    • Mailing address
    • Email address
    • Corresponding fees
  3. Fill out and submit the Application for the Master Appliance Repair (7D) Examination along with all the previous documents, to:

    The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries allows candidates to apply in person. Please refer to the list of local offices before visiting
  4. Expect a notice by mail from the Labor & Industries department and instructions on exam scheduling once the application is reviewed
  5. Take and pass the examination. For more information on the subjects and study material needed to prepare for the exam, refer to the Candidate Information Bulletin
  6. Complete a Change Assignment of Master Certificate form to be assigned to an electrical contractor and submit it with the corresponding fee
