The Master Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator License allows you to do the following work:
- Evaluate soil properties
- Use and management of soil
- Locate conventional and alternative onsite sewage systems
- Certify which sites are suitable for conventional onsite sewage systems
- Design conventional onsite sewage systems suitable for the soils
How to Get the Master Conventional Onsite Soil Evaluator License in Virginia?
- Meet one of the following qualifications in order to apply:
Qualification 1
- No prerequisites
- Education requirements
- Have a master's or bachelor's degree
- Documented qualifying experience
- Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Authorized onsite soil evaluator
- Professional engineer
- Onsite soil evaluator
- Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
Qualification 2
- No prerequisites
- Education requirements
- Have an associate's degree
- Documented qualifying experience
- Have three years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Authorized onsite soil evaluator
- Professional engineer
- Onsite soil evaluator
- Have three years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
Qualification 3
- No prerequisites
- Education required
- Have completed a VDH onsite sewage system training program
- Documented qualifying experience
- Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Authorized onsite soil evaluator
- Professional engineer
- Onsite soil evaluator
- Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
Qualification 4
- Prerequisites
- Be a journeyman or interim conventional onsite soil evaluator
- No education required
- Documented qualifying experience
- Have three years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Authorized onsite soil evaluator
- Professional engineer
- Onsite soil evaluator
- Have three years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Prerequisites

- Prerequisites
- Have a Virginia professional soil scientist license
- No education requirements
- Documented qualifying experience
- Have one year of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Authorized onsite soil evaluator
- Professional Engineer
- Onsite soil evaluator
- Have one year of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing conventional onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
- Prerequisites
- Fill out the experience verification form and attach it to the license application
- Send these documents to the DPOR Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals:
