Texas Well Driller Contractor License

The Well Driller Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Drill, bore, core and construct water wells
  • Perform tasks (depending on the endorsement of choice) related to different types of wells, such as:
    • Water
    • Monitor
    • Injection
    • Dewatering
    • Closed Loop Geothermal

How to Get the Well Driller Contractor’s License in Texas?

  1. Comply with a minimum of two years of relevant experience under the supervision of a Licensed Well Driller and provide evidence of employment history alongside the Application Form by asking all supervising Well Drillers involved to fill out theWell Driller/Pump Installer Experience Verification Form. Multiple copies of this form can be used
  2. Submit a completed Well Driller and or Pump Installer License Application Form with the corresponding non-refundable fee
  3. Await for a PSI© notification once the application has been received, reviewed and approved, to schedule a date and place for the exam
  4. Pass the General Well Driller examination before applying to take any of the exams related to endorsements to be licensed as a Well Driller Contractor
  5. Await for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to give a response once the application and examination results are completed and reviewed

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has made it possible for licensed Texas Well Driller Contractors who have passed the General Well Driller exam to upgrade the scope of their license by acquiring additional Endorsements. These Endorsements will grant them the opportunity to conduct activities related to specific lines of work. The application process for either of these Endorsements follows the same structure as the one explained above, but requires for the applicant to select the exam(s) corresponding to the Endorsement(s) of their interest instead of the General Well Driller examination.

  • Select at least one endorsement for the license of choice. Applicants must also demonstrate completion of fifty installations under supervision of a Licensed Well Driller for either of the listed endorsements:
    • Water Wells
    • Monitor Wells
    • Injection Wells
    • Dewatering Wells
    • Closed Loop Geothermal Wells

Candidates are advised to select the General Well Driller exam on their application if they do not hold a current Texas Well Driller Contractor License at the time since they will not be eligible to take any other examination until this one is passed. Multiple Endorsements can be selected at the same time once the General Well Driller exam is approved.

The “Groundwater and Wells”, “Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 1901 Water Well Drillers”, and “Texas Administrative Code, Title 16, Chapter 76 Water Well Drillers and Water Well Pump Installers” are part of the book references for all six examinations. “The Drilling Manual” applies to the General, Water, Monitor, Closed Loop Geothermal, and Injection exams. “Environmental Remediation Drilling Safety Guidelines” is included for the Water, Monitor, Closed Loop Geothermal, Injection, and Dewatering tests. The “CFR (OSHA) Title 29 Part 1926” is for the General, Water, and Monitor tests, while the “Code of Federal Regulations (OSHA) 29 Part 1910” is for the Closed Loop Geothermal, Injection, and Dewatering tests. The “Manual of Water Well Construction Practices” is required to study for the Water, Monitor, and Injection endorsement examinations. Finally, both the “Ground-water Quality of Texas, An Overview of Natural and Man-Affected Conditions - Report 89-01”, as well as the “Handbook of Suggested Practices for the Design and Installation of Ground Water Monitoring Wells” are meant to be studied for the Water Well Driller and Monitor Well Driller exams.
