How to Get the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Class A Contractor’s License in Texas?

1. Meet one of the following combination of experience and education requirements:
   • Option 1:
     • Master's Degree in engineering, microbiology, bacteriology, chemistry, biology, or another similar discipline approved by the Executive Director
     • Four years of hands-on experience; at least one-half of the work experience must be obtained in the specific field of the license
   • Option 2:
     • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, bacteriology, microbiology, or another similar discipline approved by the TCEQ Executive Director
     • Five years of hands-on experience (at least one-half of experience in the license's specific field)
   • Option 3:
     • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
     • Eight years of work experience, six of which must be hands-on (at least one-half of it must be obtained in the license's specific field)
     • Thirty-two semester hours of College or forty additional hours of Training may substitute one year of work experience
     • Sixteen semester hours of College or twenty additional hours of Approved Training for six months of work experience
2. Submit an online Wastewater Operator Application Form and license fee to the TCEQ
3. Sign up for the exam (this exam is six hours long and is offered at Registered Testing Centers or any Texas Water Utilities Association (TWUA) Regional School that the TCEQ is attending)
4. Expect a response from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) after the validation of the process

Below is all the information related to the trade exam, including the official reference list. All candidates for licensing must fulfill the pre-approval requirements stated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, before they can register to present the computer-based test. Following authorization, applicants may take the initial test plus up to three retests over the course of one year at the corresponding Registered Test Center. Access to the license exam will not be granted if the candidate does not qualify to retake the test. Depending on the testing location, applicants who fail the initial test may retake it (once) immediately and on the same day, but they shall return on another date to attempt the other three of the four chances that are given.
