Texas Groundwater Operator Class B Contractor License
The Groundwater Operator Class B Contractor License allows you to do the following work:
- Implement a workplace safety programs; hold tailgate safety workshops
- Conduct fundamental chemical laboratory studies
- Analyze lab test findings
- Make proper adjustments to treatment processes
- Conduct bacteriological examinations
- Diagnose and correct complex problems regarding storage and distribution
- Optimize chlorine usage in the water system
How to Get the Groundwater Operator Class B Contractor’s License in Texas?
- Meet one of the following combinations of required educational and work experience established by the Commission for Groundwater Operator Class B Contractor:
- Option 1:
- A Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, microbiology, bacteriology, or another similar discipline as approved by the TCEQ Executive Director
- Thirty months of hands-on experience; at least one half the experience must be obtained in the specific field for the requested license
- Sixty-four semester hours of College or eighty additional hours of Valid Training may replace two years of work experience
- Thirty-two semester hours of College or forty hours of Approved Courses to replace one year of working experience
- Option 2:
- High School or General Equivalency Diploma
- Five years of work experience, three of which must be hands-on; at least one half of the experience must be obtained in the specific field of the requested license
- Sixty-four semester hours of College or eighty additional hours of Valid Training may replace two years of work experience
- Thirty-two semester hours of College or forty hours of Approved Courses to replace one year of working experience
- Option 1:
- Register for an exam at your Local TCEQ Regional Office or your Local Computer-Based Testing Center
- Take and pass the applicable examination
- Expect an answer from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality after confirming the requisites and validating the process

Texas Groundwater Operator Class B Contractor License Exam
Below is all the information related to the trade exam, including the official reference list. Before candidates are allowed to take the computer-based test, they must first comply with the criteria to receive pre-approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. After receiving clearance, applicants can take four tests during a one-year approval period (the initial test plus up to three retests) at the Registered Test Center. If the candidate is ineligible to retake the examination, access to the licensing test will not be granted. Depending on the test site, applicants that fail to pass the initial test may retest it once right away but must come back on a different day to attempt the remaining three out of their four chances.
