Michigan Elevator Class A Journeyperson License

The Elevator Class A Journeyperson License allows you to do the following work:

  • Supervise, or perform, the following elevator-related labors:
    • Installation and alteration
    • Maintenance and repair
    • Service and adjustment
    • Inspection and testing

An Elevator Class A Journeyperson must work under a contractor.

How to Get a Elevator Class A Journeyperson License?

  1. Meet the requirements for the Elevator Class A Journeyperson license.
    • Three years of experience as a supervisor of elevator construction or service, elevator constructor, serviceman, maintenance man, or repairman. Keep in mind that the Elevator Division can credit a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering up to one year of experience. All this information must be detailed in the attached resume.
    • Take and pass the examination.
  2. Complete and submit the application:
    • Fill in the form for the Elevator Class A Journeyperson application:
    • If applying by mail, submit the application and fee to P.O. Box 30255, Lansing, MI, 48909.
    • If applying online:
      1. Go to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website
      2. Login or Register for an account (make sure to read and accept the terms and to fill in the contact's information).
      3. Go to “BCC licenses” and then click on “Apply for a License”.
      4. Read and accept the terms.
      5. Select Elevator Class A Journeyperson license and trade.
      6. Complete each step (this includes fee payment online).
  3. After submitting the application, look out for PSI© correspondence as they will be in contact to schedule the examination:
    1. Reference the PSI© Candidate Information Bulletin to go over the details pertaining to the examination
    2. Go to the PSI© examination website.
    3. Sign in or register with the same credentials as the LARA initial application.
    4. Select the corresponding examination and add the information sent by the BCC.
    5. Pay and schedule the examination.
    6. Take the examination.
  4. After taking and passing the exam, PSI© will notify the board, and the license will be issued.
