Connecticut Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor License

The Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor License allows you to do the maintenance, repair, alteration, replacement, or installation of:

• Process piping
  • Piping or tubing conveying liquid or gas used directly in:
    • The production of a chemical or a product for human consumption
• Low voltage wiring
  • Not exceeding twenty-four volts used:
    • Within a lawn sprinkler system
• Gas and water systems
• Fire prevention apparatus
• Mains and branch lines up to:
  • The closest valve to machinery
  • Equipment used in:
    • Manufacturing processes
• Water systems for human usage
• Lateral storm and sanitary lines
  • From buildings to mains
• Associated fixtures, tubing, and piping
• Swimming pools and pumping equipment
• Laboratory equipment and sanitary equipment
  • Excluding subsurface sewage disposal systems
• Making connections to backflow prevention devices
• Sewage treatment facilities and associated fittings within a building

This license DOES NOT allow you to work on millwright, solar thermal (except for repair of specific sections of a solar hot water heating system), fire prevention apparatus within a structure, and medical gas and vacuum systems.

How to Get the Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

1. Review the requirements in the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation necessary for obtaining an Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the Plumbing and Pipefitting Work and in the Plumbing License Application Path - Contractor
2. Receive the necessary instruction requirements demanded by the DCP
   • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
   • Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or submit by mail the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
   • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
   • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license and the date first issued
   • Voucher for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
   • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
   • When applying for equivalent experience and training, include all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for Unlimited Plumbing (P-1)
     • Copy of each out-of-state electrical license, currently active
     • Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
     • Proof of at least one of those states' requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor equivalency chart
     • Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction
4. Schedule the Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
   • Take and pass the Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) and the Business and Law exams
   • If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
5. Expect the official Unlimited Plumbing (P-1) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
