Connecticut Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) License

The Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) License allows you to do the following work, ONLY while employed by a contractor licensed:

  • Installation and erection of:
    • Elevators
    • Escalators
    • Dumbwaiters
    • Moving walks
  • Maintenance and repair of:
    • Mechanical equipment and fittings
    • Associated piping and wiring
    • All types of:
      • Elevators
      • Escalators
      • Dumbwaiters
      • Moving walks
  • All types of machines used to hoist or convey persons or materials

The license holder is NOT allowed to work on temporary hoisting machines used for hoisting materials in connection with any construction job or project.

How to Get the Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) License. Follow the process for the Elevator Work License and in the Elevator Journeyperson License Application Path
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send by mail the Occupational Trade Journeyperson License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
    • Copy of current CT Registered Apprenticeship Card
    • Original copy of the Letter of Apprenticeship Completion issued by the DOL
    • Notarized letters from the employer describing duties and specific dates of the work done, if the applicant has never been registered in an apprenticeship program
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • Elevator Journeyperson applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
        • Copy of each out-of-state elevator journeyperson license, currently active
        • Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
        • If licenses in multiple states are held, provide proof of at least one of those state's requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) equivalency chart
        • Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction
        • Proof of related instruction that meet or exceed those of the trade:
          • Copies of transcripts
          • Diplomas
          • Certificates for proof of completion
          • On the job training and work experiences CAN NOT be considered instead of the required classroom training
  4. Schedule the Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
  5. Await the official Unlimited Journeyperson Elevator (R-2) License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
