Connecticut Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor License
The Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor License allows you to do the following work:
- Installation and erection of:
- Elevators
- Escalators
- Dumbwaiters
- Moving walks
- Maintenance and repair of:
- Mechanical equipment and fittings
- Associated piping and wiring
- All types of:
- Elevators
- Escalators
- Dumbwaiters
- Moving walks
- All types of machines used to hoist or convey persons or materials
The license holder is NOT allowed to work on temporary hoisting machines used for hoisting materials in connection with any construction job or project.
How to Get the Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?
- Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor License. Follow the process for the Elevator Work License and in the Elevator License Application Path
- Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
- Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
- Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
- Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address

- Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
- Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
- For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
- Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
- When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
- Elevator Contractors applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
- Copy of each out-of-state elevator contractor’s license, currently active
- Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
- Proof of at least one of those states' requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor equivalency chart
- Proof of business entity as an Elevator Contractor in at least one of the states where an Elevator Contractor’s License is held
- Copy of certificate of registration with State and Federal agencies, inclusive of FEIN number
- Elevator Journeyperson applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
- Copy of each out-of-state elevator journeyperson license, currently active
- Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
- If licenses in multiple states are held, provide proof of at least one of those state's requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor equivalency chart
- Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction
- Elevator Contractors applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
- Schedule the Unlimited Elevator (R-1) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
- Take and pass the Unlimited Elevator (R-1) and the Business and Law exams
- If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
- Await the official Unlimited Elevator (R-1) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
