How to Get the Subsurface Sewage Installer License in Connecticut?

  1. Submit the completed and notarized Subsurface Sewage Disposal System Installer License Application along with a photograph, and pay the required fee as a certified bank check or money order made payable to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut". Submit the completed application form, together with the application fee, to the Department of Public Health Environmental Licensing
  2. Meet the experience requirements
    • Submit four (4) completed Verification of Experience Forms. These forms should be signed by an authorized agent from the CT Local Health Department
    • Individuals with a minimum of 4 years' credentials as a Subsurface Sewage Disposal System or Septic System Installer in another jurisdiction must submit a completed and signed Verification of Subsurface Sewage System Installer Licensure Form directly to CT DPH
    • Be aware that credit will not be given for Verification of Experience Forms that include any of the following citations:
      • For Verification of Experience Forms without prior agreement if the applicant was not present during Local Health Department (LHD) inspections
      • If the licensed installer did not confirm the applicant's participation in Subsurface Sewage Disposal System installation on the Verification of Experience Forms
      • LHD was not notified of applicant's involvement in Subsurface Sewage Disposal System installation
      • LHD could not verify applicant's participation in Subsurface Sewage Disposal System installation
      • The Subsurface Sewage Disposal System was not installed as per the approved plan, or construction deficiencies have been identified
      • Subsurface Sewage Disposal System installation was conducted over 5 years prior to the exam date
      • Credit will only be given for Subsurface Sewage Disposal System installations involving a leaching system installation, not for minor septic system repair work such as tank, manhole cover, pipe, or distribution box replacement
  3. Schedule, pay, and take the Subsurface Sewage Installer exam administered by the PSI©
  4. Wait for the Department of Public Health to evaluate the application in the order it was received. Check the status of your application and submission of supporting documentation at the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.   5. Within 4-6 weeks after approval, the applicant will receive the three-part licensing documents at the address of record
