Connecticut Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) Contractor License

The Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) Contractor License allows you to work with any spa, hot tub, swimming pool, or similar recreational or therapeutic equipment, doing the maintenance and repair, which includes:

• Heating
• Draining
• Plumbing
• Electrical
• Acid washing
• Backwash filtration
• Where such work commences at an previously installed:
  • Outlet
  • Receptacle
  • Connection
  • Fuel supply pipe
  • Back-flow preventer
• Renovation or repair of non potable water components including:
  • Shell
  • Concrete finish or vinyl liner of such pool, hot tub, or spa

Licensed plumbers or electricians must install non-potable water systems in pools, hot tubs, or spas, and is not considered swimming pool maintenance and repair work.

How to Get the Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

1. Review the requirements in the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation necessary for obtaining a Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the DCP Swimming Pool & Spa
2. Receive the necessary instruction requirements demanded by the DCP
   • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
   • Have held a CT Limited Spa and Pool Journeyperson (SP-2) license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or submit by mail the Swimming Pool Maintainer Contractor (SP1) License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots.    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
   • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license and the date first issued
   • Voucher for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
4. Schedule the Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
   • Take and pass the Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) and the Business and Law exams
   • If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
5. Expect the official Limited Spa and Pool (SP-1) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
