Connecticut Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) License

The Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) allows you to do work limited to the maintenance, alteration, repair, and installation of:

  • Lifts
  • Cranes
  • Hoists
  • Monorails
  • Overhead hoists
  • Double girder cranes with top running hoists
  • Top running single girder cranes with underhung hoists
  • Apparatus or machines used to hoist or lift materials, lifts, or cranes

The license holder is NOT allowed to work on any freight elevator and can perform this work ONLY while employed by a licensed contractor.

How to Get the Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) License. Follow the process held in the Crane and Conveyor and in the Crane License Application Path
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
    • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
    • Complete a DCP Trainee Program
  3.     • Copy of current DCP Trainee Program Registration
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • Original certificate of completion of the trainee program issued by the DCP
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • For Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
        • Copy of each out-of-state hoist, cranes, and lifts license, currently active
        • Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating that you are in good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
        • Proof of business entity as a hoist, cranes, and lifts in at least one of the states where there is a license, currently active
        • Copy of your certificate of registration with State and Federal agencies inclusive of FEIN number
        • Apprenticeship program certificate of completion in another State from Departments of Labor or other certifying government agency
        • Notarized letters from current or former employers(s)
          • Letters must be on company letterhead, dated, and notarized
          • Must include dates of employment and a specific, detailed description of your on-the job-training, work experience, and scope of work
          • Letters that do not meet the criteria listed above will not be accepted
          • W-2’s, 1099’s, or tax returns for proof of your on the job training or work experience won’t be accepted
        • Proof of related instruction that meet or exceed those indicated in the Limited Conveyor Journeyperson (R-8) equivalency chart
          • Copies of transcripts
          • Diplomas
          • Certificates for proof of completion
          • On the job training and work experiences CAN NOT be considered instead of the required classroom training
  4. Schedule the Limited Hoists, Cranes, and Lifts Journeyperson (R-10) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
