Connecticut Limited Geothermal (W-7) Contractor License

The Limited Geothermal (W-7) Contractor License allows you to construct:

  • Geothermal systems
  • Geothermal bore holes
  • Manifold connections
  • Including, but not limited to:
    • Maintenance, repair, and installation of:
      • Pumps
      • Valves
      • Casing
      • Piping
      • Pump motors
      • Heat transfer media

This registration does NOT cover work involving direct exchange systems.

How to Get the Limited Geothermal (W-7) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Limited Geothermal (W-7) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the DCP Well Drilling Informational Page
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send by mail the Occupational Trade Well Driller Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license and the date first issued
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • For Limited Geothermal (W-7) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
        • Educational transcripts or diplomas
        • Certificates from completed courses
        • Copies of any licenses you may hold in another state
        • Notarized letters from employers demonstrating on-the-job training
  4. Schedule the Limited Geothermal (W-7) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
    • Take and pass the Limited Geothermal (W-7) and the Business and Law exams
    • If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
  5. Await the official Limited Geothermal (W-7) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
