Connecticut Limited (F-3) Contractor License
The Limited (F-3) Contractor License allows you to work with:
- Foam extinguishing systems
- Special hazard systems including:
- Foam
- Halon
- Water spray
- Carbon dioxide
- Dry chemical systems
- Other liquid or gas fire suppression systems
How to Get the Limited (F-3) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?
- Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Limited (F-3) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the Fire Protection Licenses and in the Fire Protection License Application Path - Contractor
- Hold the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
- Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
- Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
- Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or submit by mail the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address

- Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
- Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
- For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
- When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
- For Limited (F-3) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
- Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction, indicated in the Limited (F-3) contractor equivalency chart plus an additional two years of work history
- Work history and/or resume to include the number of years the Journeyperson license requires and an additional two years of on-the-job training and/or experience
Proof of business/experience as a contractor, including:
- Name of business and dates of ownership/contractor for your business
Two of the following documents:
- Reference letters from clients
- Suppliers
- Inspectors
- Permits issued to your business for work conducted
Proof of related instruction that meet or exceed those of the trade:
- Copies of transcripts
- Diplomas
- Certificates for proof of completion
- On the job training and work experiences CAN NOT be considered instead of the required classroom training
Certificate of apprenticeship completion in another state or jurisdiction, if applicable. Provide the following documentation:
- Copies of all occupational trade licenses held in any state or jurisdiction
- Documentation including laws and regulations from that state or jurisdiction that reflect the requirements met to obtain these licenses
- Scope of work for these licenses
- For apprenticeship equivalency in the state of Connecticut, visit the Limited (F-3) contractor equivalency chart
Letters from a current or previous employer(s) with the following criteria:
- On company letterhead, dated, and notarized
Including dates of employment and a specific, detailed description of:
- On-the job-training
- Work experience, including all aspects of the scope of work applying for
- Do not submit W-2’s, 1099’s or tax returns for proof of your on-the-job training or work experience
- For Limited (F-3) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
- Register for the Limited (F-3) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
- Take and pass the Limited (F-3) and the Business and Law exams
- If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
- Expect the official Limited (F-3) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
