Connecticut Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor License

The Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor License allows you to only work limited to:

• Low voltage
• Alarm or signal work
• Audio and sound systems
• Interface wiring from an alarm system to an existing telephone connection for monitoring purposes

The system's voltage should not exceed 25 volts or five amperes if the work starts at an outlet receptacle or connection previously installed by a qualified electrician.

How to Get the Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the DCP Electrical License and in the Electrical License Application Path - Contractor
2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
   • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
   • Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
   • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
   • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
   • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
   • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
   • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
     • For Limited Electrical (L-5) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
       • Copy of each equivalent out-of-state electrical license, currently active
       • Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction, indicated in the Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor equivalency chart plus an additional two years of work history
4. Schedule the Limited Electrical (L-5) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
   • Take and pass the Limited Electrical (L-5) and the Business and Law exams
   • If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
5. Await the official Limited Electrical (L-5) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
