  • Geothermal bore hole
  • Limited to:
    • Geothermal bore holes employing direct exchange or direct expansion technology
  • Not limited to:
    • Drilling associated with the installation of copper
    • Piping containing a direct exchange heat transfer medium
    • Maintenance, repair, and installation of:
      • Casing
      • Piping
      • Heat transfer media

How to Get the Limited Direct Exchange Geothermal (W-9) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Limited Direct Exchange Geothermal (W-9) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the DCP Well Drilling Informational Page
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send by mail the Occupational Trade Well Driller Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • For Limited Direct Exchange Geothermal (W-9) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
        • Educational transcripts or diplomas
        • Certificates from completed courses
        • Copies of any licenses you may hold in another state
        • Notarized letters from employers demonstrating on-the-job training
  4. Schedule the Limited Direct Exchange Geothermal (W-9) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
