Connecticut Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) Contractor License

The Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) Contractor License allows you to do the service, installation, or repair of:

  • Log set
  • Stove set
  • Fireplace insert
  • Natural gas fired fireplace
  • Propane gas fired fireplace
  • Associated venting and piping that simulates a flame of a solid fuel fire

The scope of this license does NOT include fuel piping work, servicing of fuel piping, work associated with pressure regulating devices and gas containers, natural gas, except for appliances and gas valves.

How to Get the Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) Contractor License. Follow the process for the Heating, Cooling and Sheet Metal Work, Hearth Product Work, Fuel Gas Work Licenses and the Heating Contractor Application
  2. Hold the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
    • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
    • Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or submit by mail the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
    • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • Contractor applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
        • Work history and/or resume to include the number of years the Journeyperson license requires and an additional two years of on-the-job training and/or experience
        • Letters from a current or previous employer(s) with the following criteria:
          • On company letterhead, dated, and notarized
          • Including dates of employment and a specific, detailed description of:
            • On-the job-training
            • Work experience, including all aspects of the scope of work applying for
          • Do not submit W-2’s, 1099’s or tax returns for proof of your on-the-job training or work experience
        • Proof of business/experience as a contractor, including:
          • Name of business and dates of ownership/contractor for your business
          • Two of the following documents:
            • Reference letters from clients
            • Suppliers
            • Inspectors
            • Permits issued to your business for work conducted
        • Proof of related instruction that meet or exceed those of the Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) Contractor equivalency chart
          • Copies of transcripts
          • Diplomas
          • Certificates for proof of completion
          • On the job training and work experiences CAN NOT be considered in lieu of the required classroom training
        • Certificate of apprenticeship completion in another state or jurisdiction
        • If out-of-state licenses are applicable, must include:
          • Copies of all occupational trade licenses held in any state or jurisdiction
          • Documentation including laws and regulations from that state or jurisdiction that reflect the requirements met to obtain these licenses
          • Scope of work for these licenses
  4. Register for the Hearth Product Gas Limited (HPG-1) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
