Connecticut Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor License
The Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor License allows you to do the maintenance, installation, and repair of:
- Traffic signal
- Highway lighting
- All high-voltage cable splicing
- Pulling wire for all systems in excess of 2,400 volts
- Only work limited to line construction, including:
- Distribution systems
- Allied work for public and private companies
How to Get the Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?
- Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor License. Follow the process held in the DCP Electrical License and in the Electrical License Application Path - Contractor
- Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
- Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
- Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
- Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address

- Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
- Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
- For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
- When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
- For Electrical Lines (L-1) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
- Copy of each equivalent out-of-state electrical license, currently active
- Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction, indicated in the Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor equivalency chart plus an additional two years of work history
- For Electrical Lines (L-1) license equivalency, applicants holding out-of-state license(s) shall provide:
- Schedule the Electrical Lines (L-1) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
- Take and pass the Electrical Lines (L-1) and the Business and Law exams
- If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
- Await the official Electrical Lines (L-1) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
