Connecticut Accessibility (R-5) Contractor License

The Accessibility (R-5) Contractor License allows you to do the installation, repair, and maintenance of:

  • All types of elevators
  • Dumb waiters
  • Escalators
  • Moving walks
  • Mechanical equipment
  • Fittings
  • Associated piping and wiring

The holder of this license may NOT perform any work on equipment as defined previously if the platform of said equipment is to penetrate more than one floor of the building in which the equipment is to be installed.

How to Get the Accessibility (R-5) Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Accessibility (R-5) Contractor License. Follow the process for the Elevator Work License and in the Elevator Journeyperson Information Page
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
    • Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
    • Have held a CT Journeyperson's license for a total of two (2) years prior to applying
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the following documents:
    • Record of instructional and training hours
    • Copy of respective Connecticut Journeyperson license for a minimum of two (2) years before the application
    • Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
    • For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
      • Elevator Contractor applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
        • Copy of each out-of-state Elevator Contractor’s license, currently active
        • Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
        • Proof of at least one of those states' requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the DCP On the Job Training chart
        • Proof of business entity as an Elevator Contractor in at least one of the states where an Elevator Contractor’s License is held
        • Copy of certificate of registration with State and Federal agencies, inclusive of FEIN number
      • Elevator Journeyperson applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
        • Copy of each out-of-state elevator journeyperson license, currently active
        • Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
        • If licenses in multiple states are held, provide proof of at least one of those state's requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the DCP On the Job Training chart
        • Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction
  4. Schedule the Accessibility (R-5) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
    • Take and pass the Accessibility (R-5) and the Business and Law exams
    • If both exams are passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official contractor license
  5. Await the official Accessibility (R-5) Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
