Connecticut Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) License
The holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, and maintenance of (ONLY while employed by a Licensed Elevator Contractor):
- Dumb waiters
- Mechanical equipment
- All types of elevators
- Moving walks
- Escalators
- Associated piping and wiring
- Fittings
The holder of this license may NOT perform any work on equipment as before if the equipment platform is to penetrate more than one floor of the building in which the equipment is to be installed.
How to Get the Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) License in Connecticut?
- Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining an Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) License. Follow the process for the Elevator Work License and in the Elevator Journeyperson Information Page
- Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
- Required courses for high school graduation or GED test
- Apprenticeship certified by the CT DOL Apprentice Training Division
- Complete and submit the Office of Apprenticeship Training Completion Form before submitting an application for licensure
- Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send the Occupational Trade Contractor License Application to the DCP official email address

- Original copy of the Letter of Apprenticeship Completion issued by the DOL
- Notarized letters from the employer describing duties and specific dates of the work done, if the applicant has never been registered in an apprenticeship program
- Criminal Conviction Worksheet, when requested
- For military service experience and training related to this application, contact the CT Department of Labor at (860) 263-6128 to request a recommendation
- Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
When applying for equivalent experience and training, including all documentation that demonstrates experience and training for this license type:
- Elevator Journeyperson applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
- Copy of each out-of-state elevator journeyperson license, currently active
- Notarized/certified letter from each state indicating good standing with the issuing board and the date that the license was initially issued
- If licenses in multiple states are held, provide proof of at least one of those state's requirements that meet or exceed those indicated in the Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) equivalency chart
- Proof of successfully completed registered Apprenticeship Program from the DOL, including on the job training (OJT) and related instruction
Proof of related instruction that meet or exceed those of the trade:
- Copies of transcripts
- Diplomas
- Certificates for proof of completion
- On the job training and work experiences CAN NOT be considered instead of the required classroom training
- Elevator Journeyperson applicants holding "Out of State" License(s) shall provide:
- Schedule the Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) administered by PSI© in the desired location and time and pay the examination fee after receiving the DCP examination approval (the exam must be taken within one year from the date of approval):
- Take and pass the Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) exam
- If the exam is passed, submit the license fee along with the exam passing score results to obtain the official license
- Await the official Accessibility Journeyperson (R-6) License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
