Virginia Fire Sprinkler (SPR) Contractor License

The Fire Sprinkler (SPR) Contractor License allows you to do the installation, repair, alteration, addition, testing, maintenance, inspection, improvement, or removal of:

  • Sprinkler systems
  • Fire suppression

This specialty may engage in the installation of backflow prevention devices in the fire sprinkler supply main and incidental to the sprinkler system installation when the installer has received formal vocational training approved by the board that included instruction in the installation of backflow prevention devices.

Applicants who selected Class A are required to take and pass the General, Virginia, and Advanced portions. Class B applicants are not required to take the Advanced portion; they must complete and pass the General and Virginia examination portions. As for Class C applicants, they are only required to pass the trade exam.

How to Get the Fire Sprinkler (SPR) Contractor’s License in Virginia?

  1. Have a business entity
  2. Complete a pre-licensure education course from one of the DPOR-approved providers. For more information on the pre-approval process, contact the Virginia Board of Contractors:

  3. Employ an individual who holds one of the following:
    • A valid NICET level III certificate or higher
    • A valid Virginia Professional Engineer License who has experience in automatic fire sprinkler layout and installation, verified by their client(s), employer(s), or building official(s)
  4. Send a completed application with the corresponding fee to the DPOR
  5. Await a response for The Department regarding the license approval
