Steps to Getting your General Contractor's License in Florida

As a General Contractor, you are responsible for supplying the material, labor, and equipment for a construction project. To become a General Contractor in Florida, you must pass a State issued Contractor Exam and have at least 4 years of work experience and have all the requirements. Study your Contractor's Exam

As one of the hardest contractor tests in Florida, the General Contractor test requires a significant amount of studying. The three exams you must pass in order to become a General Contractor, the first two make up the trade portion of your testing requirements. The third exam (Business and Finance) is the business part. Sign Up for your General Contractor's Exam

The General Contractor’s exam is offered six times per year. Contractors need to set up the testing date and time themselves; the state does not set this up. Making the appointment a month or two in advance is recommended. The test is a two-day, open-book, multiple-choice, completely paper-based exam, and all parts must be passed. If you fail one section, you must redo the entire section. Applicants should arrive at the testing location early. Those taking the test should bring along their application packet, any supporting documents, and necessary identification. Any instructions provided when signing up or making the appointment should be reviewed and followed precisely.

Apply for your Contractor's License

When applying for the license you are required to fill out the application with all the needed requirements. The application will ask for the following work experience which is at least four years as a worker or foreman of which at least one year must have been as a foreman. The applicant must have a background check as part of the licensing process with fingerprints. They will also be asking for financial and credit information which you should have a credit of 660 to apply. Hello Gregory, To obtain a GC license, you must pass the trade and business exams. You will also need experience in the trade. Must have at least one year of experience in the construction of structures at least four stories in height.
