Connecticut Major License

The Major Contractor License is issued to individuals or companies involved in:

  • Activities such as:
    • Demolition
    • Dismantling
    • Construction
    • Structural repair
    • Structural alteration
  • Of a structure or addition that exceeds any of the following threshold limits:
    • Four stories
    • 60 feet in height
    • The clear span of 150 feet in width
    • It has an occupancy of 1,000 people
    • It contains 150,000 square feet of gross floor area

Additional threshold limits exist for special-use groups like residential, institutional, and storage.

How to Get the Major Contractor’s License in Connecticut?

  1. Visit the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) website to read the eligibility criteria, prerequisites, and documentation requirements for obtaining a Major Contractor License. Follow the process held in the Major Contractor Registration
  2. Meet the necessary education requirements requested by the DCP
    • Legal entities (both in-state and out-of-state) must register their business with the CT Secretary of State’s Office prior to applying
    • Apply for and be granted a Certificate of Authority from the SOTS that can be contacted at (860) 509-6200
  3. Apply online, by visiting the State of Connecticut's eLicense website or send by mail the Major Contractor Registration Application to the DCP official email address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and the following documents:
    • Detailed written explanation if the organization ever failed to complete any work awarded to it
    • Receipt for payment of the non-refundable application fee by check and/or money order to the "Treasurer, State of Connecticut"
    • Complete the Criminal Conviction Worksheet if the applicant, any partner, or director of the corporation ever been convicted of a felony crime
    • Written explanation if there are any judgments, claims, arbitration proceedings, or suits pending or outstanding against the organization or its officers
    • Detailed written explanation if the organization has filed any lawsuits or requested arbitration in regard to construction contracts within the last five years
    • Fill out the pertains to the organization
      • If Corporation: complete the list of names of officers and directors
      • If Limited Liability Company, Partnership, or Limited Partnership: complete the list of names of all members and partners
  4. Gather the following original items, less than thirty (30) days old, and submit with the application:
    • Credit reference letter from the Trade Industry
    • Credit reference letter from a Financial Institution
    • Three reference letters from persons familiar with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant relating to the performance of the organization’s major contracting services
    • Evidence that the organization has obtained general liability insurance for the safety and welfare of the public, with the certificate holder to be DCP
    • Certified copy of a trade name certificate from the town in which the organization is primarily conducted, if applicable
    • Certificate of legal existence from the CT Secretary of State of Connecticut, if a domestic corporation or LLC
    • Certificate of good standing from the Secretary of State of Connecticut
    • Certificate of legal existence from the state in which it is incorporated, if a foreign corporation or LLC
    • If applicable, include with application on separate sheets:
      • List all major construction projects the organization has in progress with the following information:
        • Name
        • Address
        • Owner
        • Architect and/or Engineer
        • Contractor Amount
        • Percent Complete
        • Scheduled Completion Date
      • List all major construction projects the organization has completed in the past five (5) years with the following information:
        • Name
        • Address
        • Owner
        • Architect and/or Engineer
        • Contractor Amount
        • Completion Date
        • Percentage of work performed with the organization’s own forces
  5. Await the official Major Contractor License issued by the Department of Consumer Protection
