Capacitance

Capacitance is represented by the letter C and is expressed in farads

Capacitance (C) = Coulombs (Q) / Volts (V)

The total capacity of capacitation in series is

1/CT - Series = C1 + C2 + ... Cn

The total capacity of capacitation in parallel is

1/CT - Parallel = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + ... 1/Cn

Example 1:
What's the total capacity of four 3-microfarad parallel?

”Capacitance_example1”

CT = C1 + C2 + C3 + C4
CT = 2NF + 2NF + 2NF + 2NF
CT = 8NF

Example 2:
What is the total capacity of three capacitors wired in series if their individual capacitances are 6NF, 3NF, and 1.5NF respectively.

”Capacitance_example2”

1/CT - Series = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3
1/CT - Series = 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/3
Common denominator is 12
1/CT = 6/12 + 3/12 + 4/12
1/CT = 13/12 ÷ 13/13 = 1/ 12/13
CT = 12/13 = .923NF
