Washington Master HVAC/Refrigeration System (EL06A) License

The Master HVAC/Refrigeration System (EL06A) License allows you to do the following work:

  • Supervise electrical work and electricians on the following:
    • Installation of HVAC/refrigeration:
      • Telecommunications
      • Class 2 low-voltage control circuit wiring/components in other than residential occupancies:
        • That have no more than three stories on/above grade
        • Regardless of the number of stories above grade if the installation:
          • Is made in a previously occupied and wired space
          • Is restricted to the HVAC/refrigeration system
  • Repair, replace, and maintain HVAC/refrigeration:
    • Telecommunications
    • Class 2 low-voltage control circuit wiring/components in all occupancies regardless of the number of stories on/above grade
  • Install a bonding conductor for metal gas piping to an existing accessible grounding electrode conductor or grounding electrode only when terminations can be made external to:
    • Electrical panelboards
    • Switchboards
    • Other distribution equipment
  • Excluded from:
    • Installing, repairing, replacing, or maintaining any electrical wiring located outside the HVAC/refrigeration equipment

This specialty is not limited by voltage, phase, or amperage. No unsupervised electrical trainee can install, repair, replace, or maintain any part of a HVAC/refrigeration system that contains any circuit rated over 600 volts whether the circuit is energized or deenergized.

How to Get the Master HVAC/Refrigeration System (EL06A) License in Washington?

  1. Meet the requirements for the certification level:
    • Be certified as an electrician for at least 2 years
  2. Gather the followinginformation before applying for the exam with PSI©:

    • Email address
    • Corresponding fees
  3. Fill out the Application for Master HVAC/Refrigeration System (EL06A) Examination and send it, along with all the previous documents, to:

    The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries allows candidates to apply in person. Refer to the list of local offices before visiting
  4. Expect a response by mail from the Labor & Industries department along with instructions on scheduling the exam once the application has been reviewed
  5. Take and pass the master examination. For further information on the subjects and study material needed to prepare for the exam, refer to the Candidate Information Bulletin
  6. Complete a Change Assignment of Master Certificate form to be assigned as a designated master electrician to an electrical contractor and submit it with the corresponding fee
