The Elevator Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

• Employ licensed elevator mechanics
• Bid on public and private contracts
• Cannot perform any type of work on elevators

How to Get the Elevator Contractor’s License in Washington?

1. Be registered as a contractor with the L&I Department
2. Fill out and submit a completed Licensed Elevator Contractor (LC) Operation form
3. Have at least 5 years of experience performing conveyance work, which must be verified by current or previous elevator contractors licensed to do business or instead, take and pass the multiple-choice examination

Washington Elevator Contractor License Exam

The state of Washington Elevator Program has postponed all testing until further notice due to the pandemic. However, once testing becomes available again, the state will notify all applicants to take the exam(s). All applicants can still send the applications to the Department of Labor & Industries since they will continue to approve and process the applications received.

• Types of Questions: Multiple choice
• Time Allowed: 300 Minutes
• Minimum Passing Score: 70%

  • Chapter 70.87 RCW: Elevators, lifting devices, and moving walks
  • Chapter 296-96 WAC: Safety regulations and fees for all elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators and other conveyances. Parts A , B and B-1 of WAC.
  • Chapter 49.17 RCW: Washington industrial safety and health act
  • Chapter 296-200A WAC: Contractor certificate of registration renewals - security - insurance
