Washington Commercial and Residential (02) Contractor License

The Commercial and Residential (02) Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Installation, alteration, maintenance, inspection, relocation, decommission, removal, and repair of commercial and residential conveyances, such as:
    • Wheelchair lifts
    • Dumbwaiters
    • Incline chair lifts
    • Residential elevators
    • LULA elevators

How to Get the Commercial and Residential (02) Contractor’s License in Washington?

  1. Submit an Application for Licensure as an Elevator Mechanic
  2. Meet the experience and education requirements for the license:
    • Have a minimum of three years' work experience in the elevator industry performing conveyance work which must be verified by current and previous employers licensed to do business in Washington or as an employee of a public agency
  3. Take and pass the examination administered by the National Elevator Industry Educational Program. For more information regarding the test, please contact them at 800-228-8220

The state of Washington Elevator Program has postponed all testing until further notice due to the pandemic. However, once testing becomes available again, the state will notify all applicants to take the exam(s). All applicants can still send the applications to the Department of Labor & Industries since they will continue to approve and process the applications received.
