How to Get the Master Conventional Onsite Sewage System Installer License in Virginia?

  1. Meet one of the following qualifications listed below to apply:
    • Qualification 1
      • Prerequisites
        • Be an employee, owner, director, or officer of a properly licensed contractor with a sewage disposal system (SDS)
      • Education requirements
        • Have 20 hours of training approved by the board covering basic installation of conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have one year of full-time experience installing conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Onsite soil evaluator
          • Onsite sewage system installer
          • Professional Engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 2
      • Prerequisites
        • Be an employee, owner, director, or officer of a properly licensed contractor with a sewage disposal system (SDS) specialty
      • No education required
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have two years of full-time experience installing conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Onsite soil evaluator
          • Onsite sewage system installer
          • Professional Engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 3
      • Prerequisites
        • Be an interim conventional onsite sewage system installer or journeyman onsite sewage system installer license
      • Education requirement
        • Have 20 hours of training approved by the board covering basic installation of conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have two years of full-time experience installing conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by:
          • Onsite soil evaluator
          • Onsite sewage system installer
          • Professional Engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 4
      • Prerequisites
        • Be an interim conventional onsite sewage system installer journeyman onsite sewage system installer license
      • No education requirements
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have three years of full-time experience installing conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Onsite soil evaluator
          • Onsite sewage system installer
          • Professional engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
  2. Fill out the experience verification form and attach it to the license application
  3. Send these documents to the DPORBoard for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals:
