The Master Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator License allows you to do the following work:

  • Design conventional onsite sewage systems suitable for the soils
  • Certify sites that are suitable for alternative onsite sewage systems
  • Evaluate soils and soil properties:
    • In relationship to the effect of these properties on the use and management of:
      • Soils and locations for alternative onsite sewage systems

How to Get the Master Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator License in Virginia?

  1. Fulfill one of the qualifications listed below:
    • Qualification 1
      • No prerequisites are needed
      • Education required
        • Have a master's or bachelor's degree
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
          • Professional Engineer
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 2
      • No prerequisites
      • Education required
        • Have an associate's degree
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have three years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
          • Professional engineer
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 3
      • Prerequisites
        • Hold a conventional onsite soil evaluator license, interim alternative onsite soil evaluator license, journeyman alternative onsite soil evaluator license, or authorized onsite soil evaluator license
      • No education required
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
          • Professional Engineer
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 4
      • No prerequisites are required
      • No education requirements
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have four years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
          • Professional engineer
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 5
      • Prerequisites
        • Be a Virginia licensed professional soil scientist
      • No education requirements
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have two years of full-time experience evaluating site and soil conditions and designing alternative onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
          • Professional Engineer
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
  2. Fill out the experience verification form and attach it to the trade license application
  3. Send these documents to the DPOR Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals:
