How to Get the Master Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator License in Virginia

  1. In order to apply, the candidate must meet one of the following qualifications:
    • Qualification 1
      • Prerequisites
        • Hold a conventional onsite sewage system operator license
      • Education Required
        • Have 10 hours of training approved by the board covering the basics of operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have one year of full-time experience in the operation and maintenance of onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
          • Alternative onsite sewage system operator
          • Professional engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 2
      • Prerequisites
        • Hold a conventional onsite sewage system operator license
      • No education required
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Having 18 months of full-time experience in the operation and maintenance of onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
          • Alternative onsite sewage system operator
          • Professional engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 3
      • No prerequisites
      • Education required
        • Have 20 hours of training approved by the board covering the basics of operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have 2 years of full-time experience in the operation and maintenance of onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following: an alternative onsite soil evaluator, an alternative onsite sewage system operator, a professional engineer, or an authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 4
      • Prerequisites
        • Have a wastewater works operator license
      • No education required
      • Documented qualifying experience
        • Have six months of full-time experience in the operation and maintenance of onsite sewage systems, verified by one or more of the following:
          • Alternative onsite soil evaluator
          • Alternative onsite sewage system operator
          • Professional engineer
          • Authorized onsite soil evaluator
    • Qualification 5
      • Prerequisites
        • Have a Wastewater works operator license
      • Education required
        • Have 20 hours of training approved by the board in basics of operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems
      • No documented qualifying experience required
  2. Fill out the experience verification form and attach it to the trade license application
  3. Send these documents to the DPOR Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals:
