Virginia Journeyman Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator License

The Journeyman Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator License allows you to do the following:

• Under the supervision of a master licensee:
  • Evaluate soils and soil properties
  • Use and management of these soils
  • Location of alternative onsite sewage systems
  • Design alternative onsite sewage systems suitable for the soils

How to Get the Journeyman Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator’s License in Virginia?

To apply, the candidate must meet one of the following qualifications:

• Qualification 1:
  • Prerequisites: Virginia professional soil scientist license
  • Document Qualifying Experience: One year of full-time experience assisting in the evaluation of site and soil conditions and design of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator, a Professional Engineer, or an Alternative Soil Evaluator
  • No education or exam requirements
• Qualification 2:
  • Prerequisites: Possess or hold either a valid interim alternative onsite soil evaluator license or a conventional onsite soil evaluator license
  • Document Qualifying Experience: One year of full-time experience assisting in the evaluation of site and soil conditions and design of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator, a Professional Engineer, or an Alternative Soil Evaluator
  • No education or exam requirements
• Qualification 3:
  • Prerequisites: An authorized onsite soil evaluator
  • Document Qualifying Experience: One year of full-time experience assisting in the evaluation of site and soil conditions and design of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator, a Professional Engineer, or an Alternative Soil Evaluator
  • No education or exam requirements
• Qualification 4:
  • Document Qualifying Experience: Two years of full-time experience assisting in the evaluation of site and soil conditions and design of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator, a Professional Engineer, or an Alternative Soil Evaluator
  • No education or exam requirements

Once completed, follow these steps:

1. Fill out the license application, and an experience verification form
2. Submit the documents and the corresponding fee to the DPOR
3. Expect The Department's response in regards to the license
