Virginia Journeyman Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator License

The Journeyman Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator License allows you to do the following work under the direct supervision of a master licensee:

  • Operate and maintain alternative onsite sewage systems
  • Design onsite sewage systems

How to Get the Journeyman Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator’s License in Virginia?

To apply, the candidate must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Qualification 1:
    • Education required: 20 hours of education approved by the board covering the basics of operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems
    • Document Qualifying Experience: One year of full-time experience assisting with the operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator, an Alternative Sewage System Operator, a Professional Engineer, or an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator
    • No exam requirements
  • Qualification 2:
    • Document Qualifying Experience: Two years of full-time experience assisting with the operation and maintenance of alternative onsite sewage systems verified by one or more of the following: an Alternative Onsite Soil Evaluator, an Alternative Sewage System Operator, a Professional Engineer, or an Authorized Onsite Soil Evaluator
    • No education or exam requirements

Once completed, follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the license application, and an experience verification form
  2. Submit the documents along with the corresponding fee to the DPOR
  3. Expect a response from The Department in regards to the license
