Utah General Building (B100) Contractor License

The Utah General Building (B100) Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Perform or superintend the construction of structures for the support, shelter, and enclosure of:
    • Persons
    • Animals
    • Chattels
    • Movable property of any kind
    • Any of the components of that construction except for the work that must be subcontracted:
      • Plumbing
      • Electrical work
      • Mechanical work
      • Work related to the operating integrity of an elevator
      • Manufactured housing installation
      • Exempt to engage in the construction of single-family and multifamily residences up to four units. May perform the mechanical work and hire a licensed plumber or electrician as an employee

The division may, by rule, exclude general building contractors from engaging in the performance of other construction specialties in which there is represented a substantial risk to the public health, safety, and welfare, and for which a license is required unless that general building contractor holds a valid license in that specialty classification.

How to Get the General Building (B100) Contractor License in Utah?

  1. Fill out the Contractor Application form
  2. Take and pass a 30-hour-pre licensure course
  3. Obtain a general liability insurance certificate with a minimum coverage of 100,000 for each incident and $300,000 in total where the DOPL is listed as a certificate holder
  4. Enroll your business entity with the Utah Division of Corporations
  5. Gather your EIN number (Employer Identification number from the IRS)
  6. Collect the following if the applicant has employees
  7. If the applicant does not have employees, they will only need the following:
  8. Meet one of the following experience requirements:
    • Must have held a Utah contractor license or be a qualifier for at least two years
    • Two years of experience in the construction industry with a minimum of 4,000 hours of paid work experience
    • Two or four-year degree in Construction Management
    • Be a licensed Utah Professional Engineer
    • Must have held a license in another jurisdiction for one year in the same scope of work being applied for in Utah
  9. Meet one of the following exam requirements:
  10. Expect the department’s response in a four to six-week period
