Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE)

The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) is an organization that regulates several professions and is in charge of the licensing, certification, and professional regulation of landscape architects.

The organization was established in 1937 by the 45th Legislature in the wake of the New London School explosion. The Senate confirmed the nine members of the Board after the Governor of Texas appointed them.

Landscape Architects Licenses

Landscape architecture is the art and science of landscape analysis, planning, and design. It involves preserving, enhancing, and arranging landforms, natural systems, features, and plantings, including ground and water forms. It also consists of the formulation of graphic and written criteria to govern the planning and design of landscape construction development programs and field observation of landscape site construction, revegetation, and maintenance.

How to Get the Landscape Architect License in Texas?

Individuals may apply for registration as an Architect in Texas in one of two ways:

• First one is Registration by Examination:
  1. Online application and electronic payment
  2. Complete a Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) Accredited Degree before creating an account
  3. Create a TBAE online account and pay the corresponding application fee
  4. Provide the Proof of Legal Status
  5. Support the online exam application through early exam (without a completed Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) file), and send the following to the TBAE:
     1. Official College Transcript
     2. Employment Verification Form
     3. Applicants who pass the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) prior to completing the CLARB Council Record are not eligible for licensure until the TBAE has received and approved the CLARB Record
     4. After completion of the CLARB Council Record, request the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards to transmit your Council Record to Texas
• Second one is Registration by Reciprocity (only for applicants Licensed in another State). Electronic application and payment for Reciprocity Processes:
  1. Complete a TBAE online account and pay the corresponding application fee
  2. Fulfill the Proof of Legal Status form
  3. Submit a mandatory background check and submit the fingerprints
  4. Support the online exam application by the methods listed below:
     • Apply without a CLARB transmittal:
       • Certificate of Standing (Licensure Verification and Exam History) sent directly from the State Licensing Board
       • Certified College Transcript (secure e-mailed Transcripts from college are now accepted)
     • Apply with a CLARB Council Record:
       • Individuals holding Registration Certificates in other jurisdictions applying for Registration in Texas by reciprocal transfer shall be considered upon transmittal of their CLARB Record; all arrangements for the development of the Record will be the responsibility of the applicant
  5. Contact Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards in Reston, VA, to request the transmittal of the CLARB Record to Texas
• If a candidate has forfeited their Registration under certain conditions, they must apply for reinstatement
