New Mexico Mechanical (MM-98) Contractor License

The Mechanical (MM-98) Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Covers all works described in (MS-3) Septic Tanks & Sewer, (MS-6) Lawn Sprinklers, (MS-12) Fire Protection Systems, (MS-14) Dry Chemical Fire Protection, and MM-1 through MM-4:
    • (MS-3) Septic Tanks & Sewer:
      • Excavate
      • Trench
      • Backfill and grade as necessary
      • Controls and control wiring not to exceed 24 volts
      • Install or repair incidental plug-in-type electrical control panels
      • Install, repair, alter, service, or maintain:
        • Septic tanks
        • Private sewage disposal systems
        • Manholes and sewer lines (beginning at a connection to a public or private utility and ending at a point five feet beyond the outside wall of a building or structure)
    • (MS-6) Lawn Sprinklers:
      • Install, alter, service, repair, or maintain potable water sprinkler systems
      • Excavate
      • Trench
      • Backfill and grade
      • Backflow prevention devices incidental plug-in type electrical control panels
      • Controls and control wiring not to exceed 24 volts
    • (MS-12) Fire Protection Systems:
      • Tanks, controls, and control wiring up to 24 volts
      • Bid or contract for structural alterations, electrical wiring, etc.
      • Excavate and backfill and install piping from structure to off-site water supply adjacent to fire protection system property
      • Install, repair, alter, service, or maintain:
        • Water-based fire protection systems required pressure or storage tanks
    • (MS-14) Dry Chemical Fire Protection:
      • Contract or bid or for structural alterations, electrical wiring, etc.
      • Install
      • Service
      • Repair
      • Maintain
      • Alter
      • The previous activities can be done on:
        • Fire protection systems
        • Temperature sensing devices
        • Carbon dioxide (CO)
        • Clean agents
        • Solenoid or safety shut-off devices and other incidental controls
        • Pressurized storage tanks
        • Valves
        • Control wiring up to 24 volts
    • (MM-1) Plumbing:
      • Plumbing
      • Excavating
      • Trenching
      • Backfilling
      • Install, repair, alter, service, and maintain:
        • Plumbing and piping fixtures
        • Incidental concrete supports
        • Hot water heating systems not exceeding 30 p.s.i. or 400,000 b.t.u./hour input
        • Piping for fuel, oil, and gasoline
        • Piping and appurtenances for solar thermal energy systems
        • Potable water irrigation sprinkler systems
        • Swimming pools and spas
        • Includes pneumatic or electric controls and control wiring not greater than 24 volts
        • Septic tanks, manholes, and sewer lines
    • (MM-2) Natural Gas Fitting:
      • Install, alter, repair, service, and maintain natural gas piping and fittings
      • Install hot water heating systems not exceeding 30 p.s.i. or 400,000 b.t.u./hour input
      • Steam and hot water boilers
      • May connect water to existing valved outlets
      • Warm air heating systems, including chimney connections
      • Flues
      • Refractories
      • Fittings valves
      • Thermal insulation
      • Burners
      • Accessories and incidental piping
      • Warm air appliances and other listed gas appliances
      • Incidental controls and control wiring, pneumatic control systems
      • Includes all required excavating
      • Trenching and backfilling
      • May not install LP Gas systems
    • (MM-3) Heat, Vent, and Air Conditioning:
      • Install, alter, repair, service, and maintain natural gas piping and fittings
      • Install hot water heating systems not exceeding 30 p.s.i.
      • May connect water to existing valved outlets
      • Install controls
      • Bid and contract for structural alterations, electrical wiring, and other work incidental to this scope of work
      • Control wiring not to exceed 24 volts
      • Install, alter, repair, service, and maintain:
        • HVAC air handling and refrigeration equipment and piping
        • Coils
        • Fans
        • Condensing units
        • Self-contained packaged air conditioning or heating units
        • Evaporative cooling units
        • Solar air heating and cooled mechanical air handling
        • Ductwork and accessories
        • NMAC 9 ventilation applications
    • (MM-4) Heat, Cooling, and Process Pipe:
      • Install high pressure and process piping solar thermal energy systems of any temperature or pressure range conveying gas or fluids other than potable water
      • Install, alter, repair, service, and maintain:
        • Cooling and process piping
        • Hydronic heating
        • Piping and appurtenances for steam and hot water systems of any temperature or pressure range
        • Chilled water systems
        • Condensing water systems and other process piping systems
        • Air handling equipment
        • Pressure vessels
        • Boilers
        • Refrigeration water chillers
        • Cooling towers
        • Heat exchangers
        • Fuel oil tanks and fuel oil piping
        • Electric controls and control wiring not to exceed 24 volts
        • Water based fire protection sprinkler systems
        • Dry chemical fire protection systems

How to Get the Mechanical (MM-98) Contractor License in New Mexico?

  1. Satisfy the experience requirement:
    • At least four years of documented Mechanical (MM-98) experience
  2. Take and pass the following exams:
    • New Mexico Plumbing (MM-1) Contractor Trade Exam.
    • New Mexico Natural Gas Fitting (MM-2) Contractor Trade Exam.
    • New Mexico Heat, Vent and Air Conditioning (MM-3) Contractor Trade Exam.
    • New Mexico Heat, Cooling, and Process Pipe (MM-4) Contractor Trade Exam.
    • New Mexico Business and Law (PSI©)
  3. Submit a complete notarized package with the following documents and send it to PSI©:

  4. Once the application packet has been approved and eligibility cleared, the license will be issued via USPS to the home address provided. (Licenses are effective only for three years, and a Contractor License Renewal Form must be submitted prior to expiration during each cycle).
