New Mexico General Building (GB-98) Contractor License
The General Building (GB-98) Contractor License allows you to do the following work:
- Seal coating and striping of driveways and parking lots (excludes those structures covered by the EE, MM, GA, or GF classifications)
- About residential and commercial buildings:
- Erect
- Alter
- Repair
- Demolish
- Includes all work authorized by the (GB-2) Residential, (GF-5) Recreation Areas, (GF-7) Tanks and Tower, and GS classifications:
- (GB-2) Residential:
- Erect, alter, repair, or demolish residences and apartment houses accommodating not more than four family units
- (GF-5) Recreation Areas:
- Construct, prepare, repair, clear, or alter:
- Facilities for use as recreation areas
- Including but not limited to golf courses
- Driving ranges
- Tennis courts
- Playgrounds
- Water parks
- Outdoor athletic facilities
- Miniature golf courses
- Pitch-and-putt golf courses
- Prepare the area by excavation
- Shade and rain shelters and foot bridges relative to recreation areas
- Fill
- Foundations
- Retaining walls
- Sprinkler systems
- Rest benches
- Public campgrounds and parks or similar facilities
- Including toilet facilities and lean-tos
- Construct, prepare, repair, clear, or alter:
- (GF-7) Tanks and Tower:
- Fabricate or construct on-site and install tanks for the storage of solids or liquids, below or above the ground, and towers such as:
- Radio
- Television and telecommunications towers
- All necessary site work
- Excavation and construction of concrete tanks
- Pads and foundations
- Cutting
- Welding
- Engineered structural support systems for elevated tanks
- Placement of structural members
- Engineered or prefabricated towers
- Repair and placement of liners in tanks
- Incidental storage buildings
- Fabricate or construct on-site and install tanks for the storage of solids or liquids, below or above the ground, and towers such as:
- All GS classifications work is allowed
- (GB-2) Residential:
A GB-98 contractor shall not bid and contract as the prime contractor of an entire project if the major portion of the work to be performed, based on dollar amount, is covered by the scope of any GA classification or any of the following GF classifications: (GF-1) Airports, (GF-2) Bridges, (GF-3) Canals, Reservoirs, or Irrigation Systems, (GF-4) Drainage or Flood Control Systems, (GF-6) Railroad and Tunnel Construction, (GF-8) Transmission Lines, Tanks, and Substations (NonElectrical), and (GF-9) Utility Lines.
How to Get the General Building (GB-98) Contractor License in New Mexico?
- Meet the experience requirement:
- At least four years of documented experience in the General Building (GB-98) Contractor field.
- Apply for eligibility through PSI©.
- Fill out the Qualifying Party Certificate.
- Complete the Work Experience Certificate.
- Send these documents via mail with the corresponding application fee to:

- To apply online, the candidates must:
- Sign in or create an account on the PSI© official website.
- Enter zip code for exam locations.
- Choose the corresponding examination and add the social security number.
- Pay for and schedule the exam.

- Open and check the General Construction Candidate Information Bulletin.
- Fill out the New Mexico Contractor Examination Registration Form.

- Take and pass the following examinations:
- New Mexico Residential Building Contractor Part 1 Examination (GB-2) Trade Exam
- New Mexico General Building Contractor Part 2 Examination (GB-98) Trade Exam
- New Mexico Business and Law Examination (PSI©)
- After passing the examination, complete the Application for Contractor License and the Construction Industries Division Contractor License Code Bond.
- Gather the following documents and send them by mail to PSI©:
- Contractor License Form
- CID Contractor License Code Bond
- Valid Qualifying Party Certificate
- Examination Passing Scores.
- Proof of Financial Responsibility Bond
- Proof of current New Mexico Tax ID number application with a registration certificate or official stamp.
