Electrical and LP Gas

Electrical and LP Gas Classifications are regulated by the Construction Industries Division. Each category has its bureau (Electrical Bureau and LP Gas Bureau).

Electrical Licenses

The New Mexico Electrical Bureau issues contractor licenses and journeymen certificates. To acquire an electrical contractor license, the applicant must have a journeyman certificate for the same trade.

    • Electrical Distribution Systems, including Transmission Lines (EL-1)
    • Residential and Commercial Electrical Part 1 (Commercial and Industrial) (EE-98)
    • Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Electrical Wiring 5000 Volts, Nominal, or Less (EE-98)
    • Residential Electrical Wiring (ER-1)
  • Specialty Licenses
    • Cathodic Protection and Lightning Protection Systems (ES-2)
    • Electrical Signs and Outline Lighting (ES-1)
    • Low Voltage Special Systems (under 50 Volts) (ES-3)
    • Residential Water Well Pump Installer (ES-10R)
    • Telephone Communication Systems and Telephone Interconnect Systems (ES-7)
    • Water Well Pump Installer (ES-10)
  • Journeyman Classifications:
    • Cathodic Protection, and Lightning Protection Systems (ES-2J) Journeyman

All the electrical trades require two years of experience except for (EE-98), (EL-1), (EE-98J | Part 1 Code Examination), (EE-98J | Part 2 Theory Examination), and (EL-1J), which require four years of experience each.

Steps to apply for Electrical Contractor Licenses

  1. Select a classification.
  2. Apply for eligibility through PSI©.
  3. Send the complete documents and application fees to:

  4. When approved by PSI©, apply for the Trade and Business & Law examination:
  5. After passing the examinations, candidates must gather the following list of documents:

  7. Upon approval, the license will be sent via USPS.

How to obtain Electrical Journeyman Certificates

  1. Choose a journeyman trade.
  2. Fill out and submit the following documents to PSI©.
  3. Once the application has been approved, apply for an examination.

Electrical Journeymen reciprocity is only allowed in the following states:

  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Oklahoma
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Wyoming

LP Gas Contractor Licenses

The LP Gas (Liquified Petroleum Gas) Classification is under the regulation of the LP Gas Bureau, whose objective is to ensure safety in equipment, installations, facilities, appliances, structures, and services.

LP Gas Trades

  • Carburetion Sale, Service and Installation (CNG-1 CNG)
  • Installation, Service and Repair (LP-5)
  • Installation, Service and Repair of Cylinder Exchange Cabinets (LP-8)
  • Installation, Service and Repair of Mobile Units (LP-6)
  • Limited Installation, Service and Repair (LP-4)
  • LP Gas Carburetion, Sale, Service and Installation (LP-10)
  • LP Gas Inspector Certification
  • Retail Sale of LP Gas (LP-3S)
  • Station for Dispensing LP Gas (LP-9)
  • Wholesale Sale or Delivery of LP Gas (LP-1)
  • Wholesale or Manufacture of Appliances, Equipment or Containers (LP-7)

How to apply for LP Gas Contractor licenses?

  1. Select a trade and apply for eligibility through PSI©.
  2. After being accepted, apply for the PSI© examination.
  3. After passing the examinations, the applicant must gather and complete the following documents:
  4. Licenses will be delivered by USPS once they are approved.

If applying as a business or entity, proof of registration with the New Mexico Secretary of State is required.
