Electrical and LP Gas

Electrical and LP Gas Classifications are regulated by the Construction Industries Division. Each category has its bureau (Electrical Bureau and LP Gas Bureau).

Electrical Licenses

The New Mexico Electrical Bureau issues contractor licenses and journeymen certificates. To acquire an electrical contractor license, the applicant must have a journeyman certificate for the same trade.

  • Residential Water Well Pump Installer (ES-10R)
  • Telephone Communication Systems and Telephone Interconnect Systems (ES-7)

All the electrical trades require two years of experience except for (EE-98), (EL-1), (EE-98J | Part 1 Code Examination), (EE-98J | Part 2 Theory Examination), and (EL-1J), which require four years of experience each.

Steps to apply for Electrical Contractor Licenses

1. Select a classification.
2. Apply for eligibility through PSI©.
   • Complete the Qualifying Party Certificate.
   • Fill out the Work Experience Certificate.
3. Send the complete documents and application fees to:

4. When approved by PSI©, apply for the Trade and Business & Law examination:
   • To submit an application online:
     1. Register or sign in at PSI©.
     2. Select the exam and add the Social Security Number.
     3. Pay the fee and schedule the examination.
   • To register by mail or fax:
     1. Complete the New Mexico Contractor Examination Registration Form.
     2. Pay the exam fee and send all documents to:

   • To apply by phone, complete the Examination Registration Form and call (855) 807-3994.
5. After passing the examinations, candidates must gather the following list of documents:
   • Passing score exam (Trade and Business & Law)
   • Contractor License Form
   • CID Contractor License Code Bond
   • Qualifying Party Certificate
   • Proof of Financial Responsibility Bond
   • Proof of current New Mexico Tax ID number application with a registration certificate or official stamp
6. Once completed, send all forms to the following address:

7. Upon approval, the license will be sent via USPS.

How to obtain Electrical Journeyman Certificates?

1. Choose a journeyman trade.
2. Fill out and submit the following documents to PSI©.
   • Journeyman Certificate Application.
   • Electrical Experience Verification Form.
   • Send the information to:

3. Once the application has been approved, apply for an examination.
   • In order to apply online:
     1. Enter to PSI© and sign in or register.
     2. Complete the registration information (including Social Security Number and zip code).
     3. Pay and schedule.
   • To apply via mail or fax:
     1. Complete the New Mexico Journeyman Examination Registration Form.
     2. Pay & send the documents to:

   • Submit your examination score to PSI© within six months to receive the journeyman certificate via USPS.

Electrical Journeymen reciprocity is only allowed in the following states:

LP Gas Contractor Licenses

The LP Gas (Liquified Petroleum Gas) Classification is under the regulation of the LP Gas Bureau, whose objective is to ensure safety in equipment, installations, facilities, appliances, structures, and services.

   • Financial Responsibility Bond Proof
   • Proof of New Mexico Tax ID number application with a registration certificate or official stamp
4. Licenses will be delivered by USPS once they are approved.

If applying as a business or entity, proof of registration with the New Mexico Secretary of State is required.
