Michigan Residential Builder Contractor License
The Residential Builder Contractor License allows you to do the following work:
- For residential structures:
- Erection
- Construction
- Replacement
- Reparation
- Alteration
- Home extensions and additions
- Improvement
- Demolition
- For preassembled, prefabricated, and shell housing:
- Manufacturing
- Assembly
- Construction
- Dealing and retailing
- Any kind of repairs regulated under Article 24 of the Occupational Code
Note that residential builders cannot build residential properties for the person’s own use. Also, Residential Builders must subcontract for the following work:
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Heating
- Ventilation
- Air Conditioning
How to get the Residential Builder contractor’s license in Michigan?
- Take the 60 hours of approved prelicensure education course (this must be taken through an approved provider).
- Be of good moral character.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Submit an application with the corresponding fee and the following documents:
- Copy of the certificate of completion of the prelicensure course.
- Copy of the driver’s license or of any state ID.
- Consent to Service of Process form (for non-Michigan residents only).
- If the applicant has a past criminal record, the Request for Conviction History Form must be submitted.

- Take and pass the Business and Residential Builder exam within one year of application approval.
- Upon passing the exams, you will receive your contractor’s license.

Please note that effective 11/14/19 the Residential Builder Practice/Trade part and M&A parts will be combined with the Business & Law part. Candidates will no longer be allowed to test for the Residential Builder, M&A, or Business & Law parts separately.
