Michigan Plumbing Contractor License

The Plumbing Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Supervise and install plumbing systems
  • Sewage waters
  • Potable water systems

A plumbing contracting firm will be able to operate as a plumbing contracting entity if it employs a licensed master plumber.

How to Apply for a Plumbing Contractor’s License in Michigan?

  1. Meet the licensing requirements for the Plumbing contractor's license:
    • Have a master plumber license or employ a holder of a master plumber license as a representative.
    • Make sure to be a sole proprietor, a partner in a partnership, an officer of a corporation, or a member of a limited liability company.
  2. Complete and submit the application:
    • Fill out the application form for the Plumbing contractor's license.
    • If applying by mail, submit the application and fee to P.O. Box 30255, Lansing, MI, 48909.
    • If applying online:
      1. Go to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website
      2. Login or Register for an account (make sure to read and accept the terms and to fill in the contact's information)
      3. Go to “BCC licenses” and then click on “Apply for a License”
      4. Read and accept the terms
      5. Select the Plumbing license and trade
      6. Complete each step (this includes fee payment online)
  3. Once the application is approved make sure to receive a letter with payment and schedule instructions for the PSI© examination, and schedule the test with the official provider:
    1. Go to the PSI© examination website
    2. Sign in or register with the same credentials as the LARA initial application
    3. Select the corresponding examination and add the information sent by the BCC
    4. Pay and schedule the examination
    5. Take the examination.
  4. After taking and approving the exam, PSI© will notify the board, and the license will be issued.
