The Elevator Class A Contractor License allows you to do the following work:

  • Elevator construction and installation
  • Maintenance of elevators
  • Elevator repair
  • Alteration of elevators
  • Servicing appliances related to the operation of elevators, such as:
    • Electric wiring
    • Fixtures
    • Apparatus

How to Get a Elevator Class A Contractor's License?

  1. Meet the requirements for the Elevator Class A license.
    • Five years of experience in the field of elevator construction or as a journeyperson.
    • Provide a sworn affidavit with the application.
    • Take and pass the examination.
  2. Complete and submit the application:
    • Fill in the form for the Elevator Class A application:
    • If applying by mail, submit the application and fee to P.O. Box 30255, Lansing, MI, 48909.
    • If applying online:
      1. Go to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website
      2. Login or Register for an account (make sure to read and accept the terms and to fill in the contact's information).
      3. Go to “BCC licenses” and then click on “Apply for a License”.
      4. Read and accept the terms.
      5. Select Elevator Class A license and trade.
      6. Complete each step (this includes fee payment online).
  3. After submitting the application, look out for PSI© correspondence as they will be in contact to schedule the examination:
    1. Reference the PSI© Candidate Information Bulletin to go over the details pertaining to the examination
    2. Go to the PSI© examination website.
    3. Sign in or register with the same credentials as the LARA initial application.
    4. Select the corresponding examination and add the information sent by the BCC.
    5. Pay and schedule the examination.
    6. Take the examination.
  4. After taking and passing the exam, PSI© will notify the board, and the license will be issued.
