Hello, I have my 5 year degree in Industrial Engineering from Brazil. Can I use it? I worked as installer for 2 years and have my own licensed roofing company in Seattle for about 1 year now, does that pass the experience needed?
For roofing license, what tests do I take?

Thank you

# Sofía M. 2024-03-15 16:08
Hello Gil,

Based on the information provided, your 5-year degree in Industrial Engineering from Brazil would fulfill the academic requirement, provided it is accredited, transferred, and notarized before submission. This will serve as authentic documentation to verify your degree and demonstrate your competence when applying for the license in the state of Florida. Additionally, your two years of installer experience and owning a licensed roofing company in Seattle for about one year would meet the work experience criteria.

It is essential to ensure that your knowledge aligns with the specific elements required by the Department of Professional and Business Regulation (DBPR) and the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) for the Roofing License. According to the DBPR and CILB, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in three or more roofing areas: shingles, concrete, solar tile, tile, and metal. They also need to possess experience in all the following: single-ply systems, parapet walls, flashings, sheathing and framing repairs, roof penetrations, underlayment, and insulation (tapered, flat, and foam). Regarding examinations, candidates shall pass the Florida Roofing Contractor License Exam and the Florida Roofing Business and Finance Exam within four years of the first attempt. However, you are exempt from taking the trade exam and only need to pass the business examination since you hold a degree in a related building construction field.

Moreover, you need to uphold good moral character, obtain worker's compensation and general liability coverage, demonstrate financial responsibility via a credit report, undergo a background check with electronic fingerprints, and acquire public liability and property damage insurance. Also, as part of the process, you must pay the necessary fee and complete the application form through online services or a printable application. For more detailed information on the application process and requirements, please refer to our article on the Florida Roofing Contractor License:
